I have been a member for years and am delighted this wonderful museum is in Boston. The special exhibits are thoughtfully mounted and the new wing is amazing. Anyone visiting Boston should make this part of the itinerary!
Beautiful and lucky to see a "visiting" painting by a famous artist. MOFA just a hop from the Gardner so both museums fit nicely into a cultural day.
Our tour guide recommended the Museum of Fine Arts, because we were looking for something to do after 4pm (when most of the historical sites in Boston are closed for the night). Remembering that MFA is currently displaying the recently Sam Adams/Paul Revere time capsule, we decided to take his advice. Fortunately, the MFA is a quick walk from the T, at a stop appropriate named for the museum. What we thought would be a brief stop, turned out to be a three hour treasure hunt. Upon entering the museum, which is even more impressive on the inside than it is on the outside, we discovered that because we are an active duty military family, we all got FREE admission, to the tune of almost $50 in savings. This was a pleasant way to start our experience. Then, we learned that the MFA offers a kid program, where children can get "Museum bags" to keep them occupied. What I thought would be little plastic bags with worthless trinkets and unusable waxy crayons, turned out to be a sturdy, canvas bag FULL of treasures for the kids to borrow, enjoy, and return to the museum. We signed our bags out at the Visitor's Center. The ladies working there were VERY friendly and helpful. We used the comfy benches nearby to explore the bags, which were full of trivia cards based on each museum area (for instance, my son's cards were based on the Europe exhibit, whereas my daughter's cards were based on Asia), little puzzles designed to engage children in the museum experience, purse with "gold" coins and information about the ancient Greek monetary system, a professional quality sketch pad and pencils, and a pencil sharpener. WOW! My kids, especially my daughter (who is 9) was thrilled and immediately felt inspired to learn about the art. We toured the museum, talked about various painting and styles of art work...the kids used their museum bags....we saw the Time Capsule contents (in the America wing) and had a wonderful discussion about the time in history represented by the time capsule, and then lingered and poured over the Monets (I thought there was A Monet, and the museum turned out to have MANY Monets...and Renoir...and Degas...and VanGogh). We spent at least an hour in that room alone, as my daughter oooooed and ahhhhhed over all of it. Then, finding a comfy spot on a bench opposing Monet's Grain Stack...she was inspired...to sketch (using the materials in the museum bag) and look...and sketch some more. It was beautiful to watch. As she was finishing her project, a performance artist, who happened to be a trained opera singer, approached my daughter and asked if she would like to participate in her performance art. My daughter was delighted at the prospect, following the singer to another room, where she was invited to sit in a lone chair, across from the artist, while she serenaded her with one of Shubert's works. The acoustics were incredible, the talent was breathtaking, and the whole experience was nothing short of surreal. Among other things, I had several conversations with staff and guards at the museum. They were friendly, engaging, and well informed. In short, our experience at Boston's MFA, was EXCEPTIONAL. I can not encourage you to visit this site more wholeheartedly.
Love the tours from the docents who are so knowledgable. Enjoy the permanent exhibits as well as the traveling ones. Pleasurable, relaxing and historically cultural visit. Will be back again.
