Loved seeing the large Cup racers outside, but also the variety of boats made through the years by the Herreshoff boat works. Amazing that this inventive family made other things as well, like cars.
This is worth every cent of the entry price. I fantastic display of eras of Sailing and yachting in the USA and the world. What a great family that is represented here with tons of authentic memorabilia. If you like boating you have to see this place. Well Done!
We sail an H12 - a small daysailor designed by Herreshoff, so have an affinity for his boats. If you are interested in sailing, the museum is a must-see.
From all the ( nautical ) museum's we have visited on our 3,5 week trip through New England, ( 8 in total ) this Rode Island Gem was simply the best. Very well documented, it laid out the life and work of Captain Nath, the Wizzard of Bristol. If you like sailing, and one of your interests is the early nautical history of Rode Island, if you are interested in the America's Cup, THIS is the place to visit. Nathanial Herreshoff was the first to build one of winning ships. Nearby you can visit the RELIANCE project. One of Captain's Nath vessels is being rebuilt on scale, by a group of very motivated volunteers. Just Awseome !We visited the Museum at the beginning of our trip, ( jetlaged), but especially came back to Bristol on our way back to Boston, from were we would fly home. Bought all the books we could stuff in our suitcases, its was well worth it !
Herreshoff is very small museum and focuses almost exclusively on America's Cup sailing. We enjoyed a half hour there but were hoping for a broader experience and better interpretation. Unless you are really fascinated by sailing and know enough to appreciate the apparent significance of Herreshoff boats this museum could disappoint.
Museum loaded with boating history made in America 1964-1945. Terrific value spend a few days in this gem of a original town, Bristol, R.I. TIDE Ferrari racing
Fascinating exhibits and interesting evening lectures. If you sail this place should be on your visit list.
We enjoyed all the boats on display. We were able to board about 5 and see all the beautiful woodwork inside each boat. Well worth the time & money.
Upon request, the staff also recommended a book (available for purchase) to provide more insight into the life of Nat. Herreshoff, written by his son, that provides additional insight into the contributions to one design classes, US naval defenses, catamarans, keel designs, etc, etc. A must-do for anyone interested in sailing.
Only likes here! A fantatsic museum tribute to the Herreshoff family. The smell of oakum, the magnificient works of art the Herreshoff family created over decades, many surviving today and many on display here. A working fleet of Buzzards Bay 121/2s out front in season to top it off. And don't miss the regatta in the late summer where you will see hundreds of beautiful old Herreshoff boats in action.
