As of right now, March 2015, the water levels are low, but they still have a boat ramp open. They have a fishing dock and lots of places to fish from land. A good 3 mile hiking trail, that is not too hard and a couple more that are pretty easy also. The swimming area is pretty large, but you have to walk quit a ways due to the low water level. They have many cabin's built by the CCC which have fireplaces that are pretty neat to look at, although I have yet to stay in one due to owning a travel trailer. You can ride your bike anywhere in the park. ( not too many hills) They have a bath house which is fairly new. Restrooms are usually pretty clean. Staff, very friendly.
We drove through just to check it out to see if we wanted to bring our boat back to fish later in the year. The lake was very low and it looked as if the boat ramps were closed. There were a few people camping there and it looks like a very nice place to camp and spend some time. The cabins look very nice and very comfortable. We hope to rent a cabin and take the boat once the water level is back up. It was raining when we drove through so we didn't see any wildlife but the place is just beautiful!
Spent Christmas at Lake Brownwood. I was hoping for snow, but it was OK we ended up with perfect weather. I don't think that that it mattered that it wasn't summer there was a couple of things to do and it was nice to have the park to ourselves along with a few other families. We rented a cabin, our 2nd stay at one in a Texas state park since abandoning the tent :) We rented the Loma Vista Lodge big enough for 8ppl. It was better than expected and we loved that it sat up on a hill with a great view of the lake. It really made for some nice sunsets. The cabin has 2 bedrooms each with 2 full beds, there is one restroom w/a shower. The kitchen has a stove w/oven, microwave and full size fridge. Loved the den and table that seats 8, we are a huge family so it was nice to sit down and have our meals together in one table. My only downside to the cabin was the hot water runs out quickly and the shower head was low. We are all tall, so maybe it wont make a difference for most families. The park itself has a fishing pier, walking trails and beach area and it was a nice stay for 2 days. Other than that there is not much to do, but it was lovely and we enjoyed it. There is a grocery store, gas station and dollar store that is no more than 15 mins away should you need any supplies. Oh....and this had to have been the first state park that we stayed at that we all had cell service, that was a plus. Would like to go back and visit in the summer and rent the bigger cabins.
My husband and I rented a 2 person cabin (#6) for Memorial Day weekend. Although it rained the entire time, we still enjoyed our stay and will definetly return. The cabin was rustic, clean and just perfect. It was secluded with a beautful view. We had wildlife come and visit us (wild turkeys, deer, armadillo and a fox twice!) and beautful bird watching. Staff were all friendly. Looking forward to a returning trip!
The Cabins for two were very well kept, good hot water, clean stove & refrigerator, and the hiking trails were GREAT! We saw two foxes, an armadillo, and many different birds. We enjoyed the amazing sunrise over the lake and plan on camping out again in the near future. They had a water break and the park ranger worked late getting it fixed so we were without water for a very limited time. We also enjoyed the new trail up to the ranger's station and overall had a great experience.
Customer service made wrong date of reservation of cabins, but was very helpful to correct it later. Staff was very friendly. There're several trails around the lake. We stayed in one bed cabins for two nights during Christmas time. The park has very few visitors. It's quiet and cold. The cabins were simple and clean. But it showed its age. A/C Heater can not be adjusted for temperature in one room. Lake is yellow colored and dirty. Water level is low and showed some land which was used to be underwater. Tried fishing from bank, but could not catch any. No sign of fish near banks. I may not go back again.
Spent a long weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at Lake Brownwood State Park. Stayed in the Council Bluff campground - site 88. The staff at check in was excellent. The park is nice and clean including the rest rooms/showers. The park was pretty busy on Saturday and Sunday which was no surprise sine the weather was clear and sunny with highs in the 70's. As with the rest of Texas the lake level was very low but there were still boats out on the water. There are many cabins in this park, more than I have seen in any other state park in Texas. They are in great shape and they almost made me want to rent one of them and just park my trailer. They have AC and heat and the ones I looked in had beautiful stone fireplaces. Since we were here in November shade was not a factor and the campgrounds did not have much In late spring and summer I probably will choose another park to camp in. The hundred degree days without shade on a trailer can be brutal. Bottom line - a good campground for early spring and fall.
If you like to hike or into Geo Caching, this is the place to go. Very scenic and beautiful!! If you like to camp, fish and boating, then you'll love this state park!!!!
Easter w/ extended family at Lake Brownwood is always a treat. Cabin #5 this time around. Secluded and quiet, away from the bustle of the campground but close enough to walk over and join the fray. Have always enjoyed this park, even though the old fort style playground of my youth is long gone, it's still a great park.
Been to many Texas Parks and I enjoyed this one for the trails and the quiet. Buildings from the CCC still on site, with one area having full hook ups. Very nice scenery.
