The explanations were very good. The tastings even better. Well worth a visit. Even those who do not like rum will start to enjoy it!
We are sailors - we drink rum and Mount Gay is our rum of choice! We were looking forward to this tour and enjoyed every minute. Our guide had a great sense of humor, the tasting was terrific, the film (8 minutes) was interesting, but....we had toured Saint Lucy Distillery several days before and truly enjoyed walking around the sugar plantation, seeing the "home movies" of the old days, having rum punch as well as a rum tasting and a great gift shop. We did not see much at the in-town location of the Mount Gay tour with the exception of the bottling plant. If you have no attachment to Mount Gay and only plan to do one tour, Saint Lucy should be your choice (Sorry Mount Gay - we still love you!).
Well, right away you can feel from the tour operator the important discovery of Rum made in the world! All the travellers on sail ships routing through Barbados and taking barrels of Rum back to there native ports. The economics of production on the Island, sugar cane, jobs and sales, not to mention a tourist attraction and it tastes great! The tour was excellent, the rum tasting even better, and there food was delicious too. You have to pay extra for there very best Rum for sale from the bar after, but a good shot and is it smoooooth! We even purchased some clothing and Rum of course-1.75litre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MMMMMMMMMMMM good!
Positive... The staff is lovely and so very professional. Disappointment,.. We signed up for the cocktail tour - the tour was interesting but not the mixology part. I thought we would get a lesson in making a cocktail then get to build one but in fact the 'mixologist' was more interested in talking to other staffers than us. He basically set us up and made it a competition and disappeared- didn't show us anything. This was supposed to be informative and fun but left us cold. The other couples were disappointed too. Thankfully Dario the tour guide had been such a pleasure, and wicked funny, and the staff inside the store and front desk very friendly and so we walked away loving the place. I would recommend the regular tour anytime.
We'd visited carlisle bay that morning , and from the town centre we took a taxi to the distillery. $5 taxi ride per person, for the ten min ride. Entry to the tour was $10 per person. We arrived between tours so went for drinks in the bar. The lads behind the bars were excellent . They helped us to decide on what cocktails we would have and then showed us how each was made. They are very strong cocktails . We hadn't finished these as the tour began but we were told to take them with us , "you have two hands , you can carry another as well as that !!!" We listened to a talk , watched a video and then had shots of 3 different rums. Then out to the souvenir shop , they guarantee the best prices on their products , in the gift shop. Eclipse rum $13 . Further cocktails on the veranda made it a cracking afternoon prior to the cruise departure !!!
Worth a trip if you have never done it before. Interesting and entertaining and worth a couple of hours of your time specifically if you are a rum drinker lol
This was a 2nd visit to Mount Gay Rum. The Visitor Center had been completely redone & modernized since or prior visit. The quaintness we loved on our 1st visit is gone. It was still interesting, but we loved the old oak barrels & more casual presentation of rum processing from our 1st visit. Very modern presentation of rum processing now.
A good stop while in Barbados at the Mount Gay Rum stop - informative about the history of rum making in Barbados and great samples to try after - Reasonable prices in the shop for a terrific product.
It doesn't matter if you're a rum drinker/fan or not. The tour (US$10/pers) is informative, entertaining and if you're lucky you get to drink, not one but two, rum punches and (being a rum lover) you get to do a lot of rum tasting (not the 1703). Head to the bar afterwards to try one of their signature cocktails or go to the store where you find their rum at the best price on the island.
Started with a short video presentation, then a tour of the facility, I may have this reversed, anyways it was all good. We sampled 3 varieties, then had a chance to purchase the good stuff at the bar. It was really good. ! bought some items to bring home in the gift shop, some of which would have been less expensive to buy at home. :-(I would highly recommend this tour!
