The beautiful & calm Prospect Park, called the little brother of Central Park in Manhattan is the green oasis of Brooklyn! Around since the 19th century rich people lived in beautiful Brownstones, you see bicycles, Kids, dogs, Jogging, etc … with the Subway not far to Coney Island, NY's Beach!
If you're a jogger, that a thing for you. Also if you're in for land skiing (in winter of course), walking, sledging, etc.
Wow being from Australia I had a certain preconception that Brooklyn was just all buildings and ugly. But how misguided I was. Brooklyn and Prospect Park is amazing and in a lot of ways I think better than Central Park. A lot quieter and away from the hustle, bustle and arrogance of the big smoke!! Despite the winter cold and absence of green grass and muddy areas the walk we took around the parklands and lakes was just so relaxing and so beautiful. I can only imagine what it is like in the warmer months and the other three seasons with the flowers, leaves and colours. The surrounding area with the Brooklyn Library, Museum and Botanic Gardens is more reminiscent of Rome or Madrid than a city that is part of New York. Makes my top ten must sees for New York.
Even in the middle of winter, Prospect Park is alive with activity. Lots of trails ... biking and hiking. Fun place for all ages. This is a jewel in the heart of Brooklyn. The Alliance has done a great job in keeping this park well preserved.
Prospect Park, covering almost 600 acres , one of the oldest and biggest urban parks of North America, was also created by the same two landscape designers after they completed landscaping the central park in Manhattan ,New York. Originally a thick wooded forest , and now abundant with age-old forest trees forming a canopy over the many shaded pathways and by-ways, It is an extremely pleasant place for relaxation and recreation ; the other attractions include a big lake -, the only lake in Brooklyn- , a long meadow, a park zoo, and a number of facilities for sports,- baseball fields, tennis center, basketball courts and soccer field. Open on all days of the year , brooklyners are seen engaged in various activities- strolling, walking , jogging, running, , biking, , moms pushing the prams , people walking the dog, playing with children, reading a book under a tree or taking a nap or simply relaxing under the shade of a tree. The park also hosts events such as concerts, weddings and parties , for a fee.. Having visited the park in summer, I could visualize the magnificent sight of the trees with the enchanting fall colours in autumn. .
Bring you binoculars and watch them on the lake in the trees. Listen to their "music." A laid back park....just enjoy
I frequent Prospect Park mostly to use its bike path, which provides for a solid route to a strong cardio workout. Still, this place has so much more, from running paths and trails, to horse trails, to ball fields, to boating and fishing. It's truly a gem of Brooklyn. It's especially beautiful during mid spring or as fall is coming in and the leaves have started to change colors.
Easily accessible by metro and by bus if you have an extra day in NYC and want some peace and quiet go to Prospect Park. With over 500 acres and designed by the same group that created Central Park you will enjoy just as much. Prospect Park has many walking trails, playgrounds for children, a skating rink, boat house, place for live music and more!
Real natural feel and look to the winding trails that follow the water brooks and falls. Amazing pond. Lots of room for frisbie or a game of baseball.
This is probably one of my favorite parks in NYC- and there are so many. It's absolutely worth a trip out here. What I like is that it's very easily accessible via various modes of transportation, so entrances are in very a diversity of neighborhoods, each near specific sites. There are many nearby attractions that make it a good main feature or side trip.I love the lake especially. There's a tiny island in the middle and you can ride in a boat, fish, or feed the ducks. Some of the nearby trails completely obscure the surrounding areas, so you feel like you are in the woods instead of a large city. The other gem that is an entity in and of itself is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which is on the outside border on Eastern Pkwy, with the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Library dotting the park.
