Visiting the museum was quite enjoyable, even if you dont know a lot about Ernst. Particularly good selection of his sculptures. Visiting the Musuem goes nicely with a visit to the castle nearby. If you want free admission, make sure you get a Bonn regional pass which gives you discounted and free access to many of the Bonn region sites and includes public transport.

Wer sich für die Entwicklung des Surrealismus interessiert, sollte dieses Museum besucht haben. Liebevoll und kenntnisreich kuratiert in einem wunderbar renovierten Gebäude zeigt es eine gute Auswahl der Werke von Max Ernst, der in Brühl zur Schule gegangen ist und Abitur gemacht hat. Tolle Sonderaustellungen (Website beachten). Ein kombinierter Besuch mit dem benachbarten Schloß Augustusburg bietet sich an.

Max Ernst was born in Bruhl, so it is very fitting that a museum dedicated to his art should be established here in his home town. I found it quite touching to think that Ernst might have sketched in the grounds of the Schloss Augustusburg, where I had just been walking.The collection gives a good overview of Ernst's work from an early self portrait to his first ideas of surrealism, then the wood engraving collages (weird!) and the strange textural techniques. There are about 70 sculptures, including a couple of chess sets and the huge Capricorn sculpture.My favourites were the D-paintings: a series of birthday gifts for his wife, Dorothea Tanning - every year a new painting; each one filled with moonlight, mystery, northern lights, lightning...Don't expect any of Ernst's big famous paintings like the Robing of the Bride (that's at the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice, by the way), but there are plenty of interesting pieces not often reproduced in art books.The museum itself is crisp and new. There's a small shop and a nice cafe (Chez Max), offering some very tasty cakes and a good selection of teas. The museum is a 5 minute walk from Bruhl station, which is less than 20 minutes by train from Cologne's main station (four trains an hour, costs 3.80 euros each way). Well worth combining with a visit to the Schloss - I visited both in one afternoon.

I liked the architecture and the way the exhibition rooms are laid out and of course Max Ernst's works, especially his collages and sculptures. I have never spent so much time in a museum and just did not want to leave. An absolutely enchanting experience!

This museum is a great monument to his oeuvre.Enjoyed seeing the special exhibitions, which provide way more information about Max Ernst than the regular permanent collections can. I'm not much of a Max Ernst fan, but I enjoyed the museum anyway -- so much to see and to think about. A wonderful painting of Peggy Guggenheim's dog on display in the special collection -- wow!

Max Ernst was born in Bruhl and it is clear from the qualityof the Gallery that the town is proud of him . The house which contains his sculpture , paintings and etchings has a lavishly reconstr ucted interior with large and well lit rooms and provides an impressive display of art and sculpture from the extraordinary beautiful La Plus Belle to the comic Assistants . A fair entrance fee too . It is easily reached from Cologne ( about 20 minutes)' tains running about every 15-20 minutes from the Bahnhof From Bruhl Bahnhof is about a 30 minute walk and is well sign posted

Die Kunst des rheinischen Expressionisten und die wechselnden Sonderausstellungen sind immer eine Fahrt nach Brühl wert, zumal auch die Schlösser fußläufig erreichbar sind.

This large, impressive museum is just a couple of minutes’ walk from Brühl station and the nearby Bishop’s Palace, but don’t expect locals to show you the way. Three people I asked did not seem to know of its existence. But it is sign-posted and hard to miss (turn right when exiting the station and you are almost there). This is a typical modern construction, lavish and minimalist at the same time, housing an extensive selection of Max Ernst’s works, mainly lesser known items. It consists of about a dozen large, light & airy rooms, all dedicated to different stages in the artist’s life and described in German, English and French. There is also an audio guide. The admission charge is waived if you are in possession of the Bonn City Welcome Card (excellent value, but you will need the 12 € version to use the train out to Brühl). This museum is an example of the high esteem in which the arts are held in Germany. Public money has been lavished on it and the result is spectacular. There is an excellent cafe and a shop that sells books relating not just to Ernst but to Dada, Surrealism and Modernist Art in general. I noted that there were only two visitors apart from myself during the time I spent there. It was wonderfully relaxing but also faintly morgue-like on account of the hushed, other-worldly atmosphere, an impression heightened by the museum’s black-clad attendants silently gliding past the ethereal artefacts. No to be missed.

Max Ernst (1891-1976) wurde in Brühl in der Nähe des Schlosses geboren. Deshalb hat widmet die Stadt Brühl ihm als einzige weltweit ein Museum, das am 4. September 2005 eröffnet wurde. Es liegt ganz in der Nähe des Schlosses Augustusburg. Ein Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert wurde um einen Glaspavillon ergänzt, in deren Untergeschoss Wechselausstellungen gezeigt werden - derzeit eine über George Grosz mit teilweise verstörenden Aquarellen, Zeichnungen und Collagen, die bis 18.12.2011 besichtigt werden kann. Die ständige Sammlung zeigt einen Überblick über das umfangreiche Schaffen des Dadaisten und Surrealisten, der unglaublich kreativ war und eine Vielzahl an Gemälden, Collagen, Grafiken, Plastiken und Assemblagen hinterlassen hat. Seine Bilder sind so interessant und abwechslungsreich wie sein Leben. Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall. Das Museum ist geöffnet: Von Dienstag - Sonntag: 11 - 18 Uhr und am 1. Donnerstag im Monat von 11 - 21 Uhr.

Bei unserem Besuch in Brühl (südlich von Köln) hatten wir Gelegenheit, einen besonders schönen ‚Kunsttempel’ und die darin ausgestellten Kunstwerke kennenzulernen: Max Ernst Museum Brühl. Nicht weit vom Bahnhof Brühl entfernt liegt das Museum. (Man kann also durchaus mit der Bahn anreisen, um das Museum dann in wenigen Gehminuten zu erreichen; oder mit dem PKW – ausreichend Parkplätze gibt es am Bahnhof.) Schloss Augustusburg liegt ebenfalls in der Nähe zum Museum. Bei dem schlechten Wetter, das wir im Januar bei unserem Besuch hatten, waren wir froh, ins Museum gehen zu können. Das Museum befindet sich im „Brühler Pavillon“, einem zweigeschossigen klassizistischen Bau in U-Form (ein ehemaliges Ausflugslokal von 1844)– wobei man in das ‚U’ hinein einen Glaspavillon dazu gebaut hat, in dem sich der Eingangsbereich und Platz für Wechselausstellungen befindet. Dieses Museum in Brühl ist weltweit das einzige, das sich dem Werk von Max Ernst widmet, so konnten wir nachlesen im Hausprospekt.Was einem auch sogleich auffällt – es werden sehr viele Skulpturen und Plastiken gezeigt. Bereits vor dem Museum begrüsste uns schon eine Dreiergruppe von Max Ernst Skulpturen. Beim Betreten des Museums im Erdgeschoss nimmt einen gleich ein Bronzeguss des Werkes „Capricorn“ gefangen. In einem separaten Raum werden die frühen Arbeiten Max Ernst gezeigt, die uns besonders ‚fesselten’ durch ihre Ausdruckskraft, und man kann sehr gut in einigen Arbeiten Details aus Ernst’s Heimatstadt Brühl erkennen – so z.B. Schloss und Parkbilder.Max Ernst, der ab 1922 in Paris tätig war, floh als entarteter Künstler diffamiert, nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges in die USA und kehrte 1953 nach Frankreich zurück. In der ersten Etage dieses wunderschön hergerichteten und renovierten Gebäudes sind Arbeiten von Max Ernst in verschiedenen Blöcken zusammengestellt: Graphische Arbeiten, Gemälde und Skulpturen – immer wieder bereichert durch Fotos und Drucksachen . Zeit für eine Pause im Museumsbistro >Chez Max< hatten wir bei diesem Besuch leider nicht, aber wir konnten uns gut vorstellen, dass es ‚ein Platz für Geniesser’ ist – so wie man sich selber nennt.Unser Tipp: Kombinieren Sie doch Museumsbesuch und Bummel durch den nahe gelegenen Park des Schlosses Augustusburg. Vom 15.1.-3.6.2012 findet im Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR die Sonderausstellung „Niki de Saint Phalle“ statt; eine franz. Künstlerin, die durch ihre Nana’s berühmt geworden ist.
