Great way to spend a rainy day! fun museum and the largest of it's kind in Texas! Old cars, oil derricks, pioneer town, vintage clothing... geology and more. Two floors to explore! Clean restrooms. Friendly staff... and did you know there is a mountain range under Amarillo??? Gotta go on in to find out all about it!
I was very impressed by this museum, and would love to return to see other exhibits. First floor has a blend of natural and social history. The "Pioneer Village" is really well done, and children would really enjoy it.
The Museum has many exhibits in different historical time periods. It has it's own pioneer village and a huge gun room.It is a self touring museum. My husband and I sent 2 hours visiting the many exhibits in the museum.
Good for older kids and adults. Parking is street side and to rear of museum. Good dinosaur exhibit and a nice section about oil and gas exploration.
The Smithsonian displays have nothing on this museum. I've been through the big ones on the mall in DC. The aren't any better. The reviews are right. Don't miss this place! From the oil industry floor to the pioneer town in the basement to the firearms collection, it was all captivating! And this is with 4 children ages 8-16 in tow! We all found something we enjoyed, we all learned and best of all we went on a free day. But it would be worth paying to return to.Go. Now. You!
A nice history of the area. I learned things about the Amarillo area that I never knew before...and I grew up only 100 miles from there!
Our plans to hike in Palo Duro Canyon State Park were cut short by snow so we drove into Canyon and spent several hours going through this museum. Because of the snow we pretty much had the museum to ourselves. We came away humbled by the rugged people who settled the Texas Panhandle. The oil rig exhibit is very impressive--but so were the cars and the guns and the art. This is a great museum.
With numerous exhibits to visit, allow yourself at least 2+ hours to tour this self-guided museum. Ample parking is available to the side and rear of the museum and there is a quaint gift shop to the immediate left of the entrance. Much to see and learn (dinosaurs, windmills, history of the city, oil, and much more) - a must-see in Canyon!
The Panhandle Museum is too easy to miss but if you have some extra time in the Canyon area it's work dropping in. All of the exhibits are well done and interesting. It's child friendly so good for families too. Certainly worth the effort if your near by.
Really good museum about Texas and the Pandhandle. Great info about dinosaurs and a very good gun collection. Worth the visit , kids love it!!
