I've lived here all of my life and just visited this past year. If you want some great WV history, interesting and well-presented, downstairs at the Cultural Center is the place!
A very in depth history lesson on the State of West Virginia!! My husband and I enjoyed the museum very much!!
This is one of the best state museums ever! And it is all free! It truly tells the great history of the state of WV. Everything in the museum is so real from the early settlers to present day. Not only a great educational tool for kids but great for adults to travel down memory lane.
We spent two nice hours in the museum . Its really well done and well maintained! Congratulations! You can learn the culture and how the state grow along the various events.. I liked the small movies and the narration along the way..And.. Its FREE! I do recommend. Being from Brasil and living in Boston was a great experience to learn West Virginia!
It is a great museum with a lot of history! Every West Virginian should go sometime! One of the nicest museums I have been in!
Very open and friendly - surprisingly so. The grounds are very pretty and the governor's mansion is right next door.
I decided to visit the State Museum since I was already touring the State Capitol building. The two buildings are located next to each other and share the same parking lot.I allocated an hour to view the museum. I was pleasantly surprised by the museum and discovered that an hour wasn't quite enough! The museum is laid out as a walk through West Virginia history. You walk a path that takes you from prehistoric times in the state to modern times. There are several audio clips and videos which make the experience more lively.Amazingly, the museum is free of charge. Parking is available in the nearby Visitors parking lot--which has metered spaces. The meters accept only coins (no credit cards). It was 25 cents for 30 minutes. And, the meters will accept up to four hours at a time.
This is a must see if you are traveling in WV and enjoying learning about the area. Very well laid out museum and lots of great info.
This was a very up to date museum. Great exhibits and very educational about the state of West Virginia. You toured at your own pace which I always prefer. When you finish the museum you need to visit the gift shop, it has some beautiful things related to WV.
We stopped in today with my six and two year old. They had a scavenger hunt that my older son enjoyed and my daughter liked the fish along with the soda fountain. The amount of stuff was the right amount for an hour visit, with older kids this could be 1.5 hours. We stopped by the Capitol building after and took some pictures. Warning they're serious about parking, ended up with a five dollar ticket.
