I visited the area in late August. The weather was rather comfortable, but I did go early In the morning. No one was out and I had the mountain lake to myself so to speak. It was a quick trip but a rather beautiful spot to see.
Very easy to get to, this National Forest is worth a visit. They have fishing, boating, swimming and camping. It is a National Forest so if you like the outdoors, you will love this place. Wildlife everywhere. We came up from Clifton Forge for the day and enjoyed the visit. General store has a small variety of goods including expensive gasoline. Lots of boats are stored here and you can spend an enjoyable day in the outdoors. We saw a bear crossing the road which is always fun. We don't get that opportunity very often but this lake is fairly remote and your wildlife sightings are higher than normal. You can visit the dam and get an up close view of the wall.
Our gps was useless in the mountains, so bring a good map. Otherwise you're not going to have an easy time finding the large lake. It was a reconnaissance trip so we were just looking to picnic and swim somewhere. This place was amazing! Mountains all around the lake, and clean clear water, God's country indeed! We saw one boat the whole time we were there, and were the only people there for most of the time. Small swimming area, probably better for a boat (not a rowboat!) and some fishing. Great place to relax! Clean showers and restrooms too. Make sure to bring some food and water, nothing's around otherwise.
We spent some time at Lake Moomaw on a recent weekend trip to the VA mountains. The lake itself is very nice, and the facilities are well-kept and clean. As another reviewer mentioned, it is not the easiest lake to find, but the drives are very scenic, as well. So, as long as you are not in a rush, locating the lake can be a part of the relaxing trip. We chose to picnic near one of the swim areas because most of the picnic areas were offset from the lake, with no views of the lake. However, there are picnic tables right next to the lake near the marina, which we discovered on a second trip to the lake after our picnic. We saw deer several times while we were driving around the lake, as well as red squirrel and chipmunks. This is a very lovely lake in the mountains, and is a great option for taking in the mountain views without having to hike. Many of the parking areas to access the picnic and swim areas are honor pay.
It's a great place for boating, though I wouldn't recommend swimming there
This is a very nice lake to visit. Good fishing and places to swim and picnic. A little out of the way but worth the drive.
This place is certainly not rustic. There's some decent scenery, but the first order of business really is boats here. Campgrounds were just places to park your butt when you weren't on your boat. But, there were a select few really nice sites overlooking the water. RESERVE to get one of these. Actually, just reserve anyway. When we got there on a Friday afternoon, there were only 5 spots left in the whole place. There are also some nice walk in sites (but even these fill up).Good place to play around on your boat, and we had fun paddling a kayak around. But all the boat motors and generators mean you won't really feel like you escaped into the wilderness.
We spend most of our summers camping in the Western United States so a camping trip in Virginia was very different for us. The campground loop we stayed in is very well maintained and had 4 free showers and flush toilets. If you were a camper you didn't have to pay the $5 fee at the beach, which also had free showers. Anyone that camps out West knows how rare showers are and that you have to go to town and pay for them. That alone made Lake Moomaw a bargain. There was a power outage while we were there and the staff worked very hard to lessen that inconvenience. The scenery at the lake was lovely and we enjoyed our time in Western Virginia.
we like to hike and enjoyed the scenery very much. the trail we took was moderate to difficult. No one else was in the park that we could tell. my husband picks the trails. serene and beautiful.
I was actually disappointed. The campground was great. We had a great time. However the lake water was low. It was off season so we wouldn't have gone swimming but that wouldn't have been possible anyway. Just check about activities that are open before you go. Also check water level if you are interested in swimming. Could be great for boaters and fishing but I don't know.
