The blue bus winds its way up out of the town along a road that gets progressively narrower with sheer drops only a few inches away from the wheels. The driver is unconcerned as he continues around bends so tight that the tail of the bus is actually over the edge. The thought that he drives this road every day helps to reassure the nervous tourist, as do the chattering passengers, who, on their way home from the market seem oblivious of any danger. Guidebooks tell of spectacular views, but this has to be one of the most beautiful as well, with olive groves and lemon trees on every slope. At first glance the little hill village of Sant Agata doesn’t seem to offer much, but sit at the little cafe at the bus stop and have freshly squeezed orange juice from fruit just picked while the owner tells you that oranges on the coast aren’t as juicy those from the hillside. Let him discover you are not English, but from Ireland and he will smile broadly and tell about the friends he made from Ireland when he was at the World Cup. Ask about a walk to go on and directions are given to a monasterie further up the hillside. With much waving of hands to show the way, he will bid you, “Ciao!” as the steep hillside beckons. Nothing moves in the searing afternoon heat except the sweat on your brow as you trudge up that stony road looking for shade from overhanging branches. The eternal cicadas weave a background of sound as you plod further up the hillside looking for the monasterie, which incidentally in Italy can, and in this case did, mean convent. The ornate gates with their mute intercom lead the traveller up a long and uninviting tarmac road to an even less inviting and austere building of brick topped by the campanile, or bell tower, which has at its top what is the object of the walk, the belvedere, or viewpoint. There is no sign of life, no movement, no sounds only the constant sawing of the cicadas. Press the bell and be prepared for the very loud ring from the depths. Listen for the footsteps coming to the door. Except that they don’t come. At this hour the sisters are probably at devotions. The bell tower frowns silently as leave is taken, talking reduced to whispers in case it disturbs anyone. And when you return to the bus stop to wait for the blue bus, your new found friend, who is now polishing his car, will enquire about your walk. Your lack of success will encourage him to tell of the time he visited the tower, and how, after repeated ringing, the door was eventually opened by a sister with a large tomato stained napkin tucked into the neck of her habit. When he asked to see round the tower he was told that they were at prayer. And do you eat spaghetti while you’re at prayer, sister? He got to see round the tower. Or so you’ll be told.
Mycket fin kyrka.
All'interno opere cinquecentesche.
