This formal garden was more than I expected. The formal hedging, statues and beautiful trees give this garden a wonderful atmosphere.
Only rated this as average - because of the facilities and parts of the garden needed a good weeding! The gardens are stunning from a distance - but once you get up closer a bit of work needs done. Nowhere to get a coffee or a meal on site. If they did this I'd definitely mark up. Good parking, nice walks for all. Toilets at car park. Dogs allowed on a lead.Would definitely return as I love the gardens - and there are good pictures to be had - maybe take a flask, etc. next time.Entrance fee (smallish).
To see such a beautiful parterre garden on such a scale was overwhelming. We were really taken with it. The layout is varied and well thought out. The initial view from the castle level looking down onto the scene below is jaw dropping. The maintenance of the garden isn't perfect but no doubt matters are covered in a rota. It certainly didn't spoil it for us unlike the previous reviewer. £5 admission will certainly not cover the maintenance costs.
Despite several visits to Crieff we have always missed this place. Well we missed a gem. If you are in the area this has to be seen. It's magnificent
I had seen pictures of this shared on Facebook and made sure we went when we were in the area.It did not disappoint, the view as you walk out onto the terrace is breathtaking. The desings throughout were beautifully manicured and well looked after. We were there in Autumn and the leaves were just starting to turn. The colours were amazing. There were still some flowers blooming but I can only imagine how it would look in summer. There was a lovely display of dahlias? near the greenhouse out the back that were beautiful too. There are plenty of places to sit throughout the garden and enjoy the garden but no café.
I don't know what Pat H who reviewed in June expects. how many Gardeners can be employed when you are charged £5 to visit? The gardens were really impressive. there was little in the way of weeds in the main garden when we were there and the yew trees and box hedges were neat and trim. There was an impressive array of acers which are my husband's favourites. There were some weeds in the kitchen garden but this wasn't causing a problem to the produce and most of them were in the spare bedding plants that were clearly surplus to requirements. One word of warning - the gardens don't open until 1pm so don't try to visit in the morning like we did. there are a lot of steps down from the top but if you ask there is parking for disabled people at the garden level and we walked back up the slight slope close to the disabled parking without having to climb all the stairs
Well worth a visit, but not open until after 1pm. It was worth it, if only to experience the one mile long drive lined each side with Beech trees.
We were surprised at the length of the drive (shame that those visiting in coaches will miss this as it appeared they arrive by a different route) - we have visited many stately homes and gardens and this is the longest we've seen. The gardens are laid out beautifully and can be viewed from the top of an exceptionally high series of stone steps. We were a little disappointed not to be able to walk through the grounds to the hill in the distance which would have been a fantastic vantage point to view both the garden and the house, but this was fenced off. Also, the walled garden and greenhouses were a little disappointing - we heard that we could walk through them but when we reached them they looked very scruffy and unkempt that we thought we were mistaken and it was a private area. There is no cafe so either eat first or take a picnic. Some of the garden needed weeding but overall, a fantastic garden.
Truly one of the most magnificent Italian/French inspired formal gardens attached to the Drummond Castle (actually inhabited). Stepping down the extensive stone staircases leads to a brilliant array of flowers, bushes, lawns and trees designed in a geometric fashion to wow the senses. This is a must see on any Scotland itinerary and is only about an hour outside Edinburgh.
I'm sorry that you didn't appear to enjoy your visit. Distances always seem further when walking in the rain but it's only a couple of hundred yards from the car park to the gardens. I'm also sorry you didn't find the toilets - located in the car park, or the refreshments we sell in the ticket office. October is often the best time to see the gardens as the autumn colours of the maples are amazing. We're proud of the 4-star award given to the gardens by Visit Scotland.
