The races take place at a special track within the city of Obihiro. There are races during most of the summer and also some during winter. There are also evening races. The race consists of heavy working horses pulling a kind of sledge over about 200-300 meters through very heavy turf and over two artificial hills. The turf is very heavy going so the horses really struggle. It gets worse over the hills. On the occasion of my visit, severl horses went down on their knees. One horse fell and was unable to get up again. It took for ever to remove the harness and get it back up. Nobody appeared to really know what to do and I did not see any vet or officials getting involved. I really did not enjoy witnessing this incident that I would consider as cruelty to animals. However, my Japanses friends could not understand what my problem was. But be warned, this is not for the animal cuddlers. There are souvenirs being sold and lots of food stalls. There is also betting going on and some people appear to be quite keen. There are a couple of restaurants and a museum outside the ticket gates. It is possible to watch the start of the races from there without paying the fee. There is also a nice shop selling a huge range of local agricultural produce including cheese and sausages and some funky farmer clothes. The museum tells the story of the history of these working horse breed which originates from Europe and the Japanese breeding effort was substantially shaped by a mare called Irene. Most of the text and signs in the Museum are in Japanese. Entrance is free.
