My husband is a keen student of the Civil War, and he was pleased to see some items that he's never seen exhibited. The house is beautifully appointed with impecable attention to the details of the period. You'll feel as if the family and Jeff Davis have just stepped out! The audio tour is informative, and the docents can answer any questions that you might have. They accommodate group tours. Seniors only pay $4--a real bargain. Parking is in the rear, and you enter in back. Take time to drive around the area to see some of the beautiful old homes.
What a fascinating museum. I learned so much about the city's history & the Civil War!There had excellent art exhibitions too. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're interested in history!
Danville Virginia is rich in history and this is where you can find out all about those times gone by with various exhibitions and always a current artist on show. Great staff and well worth your time!
We were impressed with the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. The Sutherlin Mansion sets a beautiful stage for history and art from the era. The Civil War memorabilia is quite impressive and the history surrounding the mansion will intrigue any Civil War buff. Antiques abound inside the lovely Italian villa architecture, well preserved for all to enjoy. You may visit using the audio tour or more personable. The Museum Curator is well versed in the history of the mansion, the Civil War, the antiques and the era. Well worth the visit!
Joyce led us on a 90 minute walking tour of the fantastic age of Danville's tobacco and textile mansions. Sharing secrets of each home or church she was vivacious and entertaining. She was also able to arrange an inside the mansion tour at one home where the owner shared their restoration experiences. A must tour!
I'm a native of Danville and when I was in school, this building was used as a library. It was a pleasant suprise when I stopped by on a recent trip and saw that it was not a beautiful museum. The staff has gone to great lengths to preserve the history of Danville and the tour guide was excellent in pointing out the history of Danville. I would highly recommend a visit here when you are not rushed.
Beautiful place. Lots of Civil War history. Staff was very nice. A delightful, unexpected surprise! Would definitely visit again.
Well maintained civil war historical site-last capital of the confederacy. Must see for historians.Educational trip for youngsters. Excellent guides who are knowledgeable. Small gift shop inside. Also has a rotating art exhibit for those who are interested.
Excellent set up for information on the mansion and the work of arts. Also had a lot of information on other attractions in the area. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
This is one of the most beautiful museum that I have been in. I love the history behind the home. I wish it was just a place where it tells about history and not fine arts. I think the history behind it is more important than the fine arts but that is just my opinion. I wish they would stop fighting over the removal of the flag. The flag should stay standing it does not mean what people think it means. It is history
