Dreux is a smallish town West of Paris with some interesting old half timbered buildings and churches but without doubt the jewel in the crown is the Chapelle Royale , perched above the town it looks impressive from the outside and when you have climbed up to it the views down over the town is great . Inside the chapel the amazingly luminous stained glass windows make you breathless with wonder . Although they are nowhere near as old as the windows at say Chartres they are much closer and therefore easier to understand . They shine with light especially the blue . The windows are made by Sevres and when the glass factory burned down the secret of how to make that amazing colour died with it . Other than the windows the roof is interesting and the crypt too . The last king of the French is buried here (Louis Philippe) and all his descendants It is small so won't take long to visit - headphones are available and it costs about 8 euros . There is a little gift shop on site . PSThere is a large North African population in Dreux so if you like couscous this an excellent place to try some
The village of Dreux has a rich history that included being the location of a Celtic tribe and a Roman fortification. By the 18th century, the chapel was established by the Duke of Penthièvre as a family burial place. Over the next century, the chapel survived the French Revolution to become the Chapelle Royale St-Louis de Dreux, now the final resting place of the Orléans royal family. The family crypt below the church has statues of these reclining nobility.
Although closed in low season it gave us envy to come back and visit it.
Très intéressant historiquement. Parc superbe.
