I grew up in Dubuque; all those years ago we call this the Fourth St elevator. First built in the 1870s, it served as a practical & fast way to get to the top of Dubuque's steep bluffs. Now it is a unique tourist attraction & I ride it most times I am back in Dubuque. The view from the top is the best, with the Mississippi River and downtown Dubuque spread in front of you. If you have the time and the weather is acceptable, this is a 'must' if you visit Dubuque.
I just happened to see the elevator from our hotel window and went looking for more information. My husband and I have vacationed in Dubuque many times but this was the first time we rode the elevator. Everyone should take the time to enjoy this attraction. You will be glad you did!
This is a must see place on your visit to Dubuque. The hills used to be lined with these elevators. Makes an easy ride to the top of the hills if you don't feel like riding your bike up W. 3rd St.
It's a fun ride. It's a spectacular view! Wander through the shops or ride to the top and wander through the neighborhood. You can spend moments or an hour and enjoy.
We have visited this elevator several times. It is always a pleasant surprise to get to the top. Folks are friendly. The views are nice. I personally love the shops at the bottom!
This is a must see in Dubuque. For a nominal fee take a ride on the 4th Street elevator. This is actually closer to a cable car than an elevator. Climb in the elevator/cable car and ride to the top of the 4th street bluff. After disembarking on top you will have a panoramic view of the city of Dubuque as well as three states- Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. The bluffs are beautiful in any season, but fall is particularlly breath taking. Experience the varied colors of the changing leaves and admire the Mighty Mississippi River.
Even if this is your first time in Dubuque, you need to see the city from one of the best views. Built as a short cut for a doctor to have an afternoon nap, its a rustic and imaginative way to a great view. Think of it as a moving closet to the past! Very small fee, seasonal, one of the first things I do when I visit.
This is an adventure for kids of all ages, and very unique. Just enough of an incline to make you a bit scared, so if you tend to be, don't sit in the elevator cabin on the "low end". A must do in Dubuque and very unique
Fun way to view the city and experience the way early business people made it to and from work in the downtown area. This unique cable carr offers fun ride for kids and adults and a very affordable experience.
An inexpensive "Have to do"We visit this when ever we are in Dubuque. a nominal charge for this elevator which is the steepest cable car in the United States. It is closed for rides in the winter but is still a place to drive by.
