This attraction is 7 km away from Tilcara town. The walk is very easy and you can have a great view to the Andes Cordillera. The Huasamayo river has carved the rock giving a "throat" aspect. I visited in August 2008
Beautiful views but scary drive up. It takes about an hour to get there. Mame sure you don't start later than 2 hours before dusk or you won't be able to see the fall
Quite a trip up the mountain on a very and I mean very narrow dirt drive. Very nice views all the way up. Don't drive yourself! Take a tour as the drive has narrow hairpin blind turns with no guardrails.
We hiked up there. The hike is easy. Just take enough water. In my opinion the view on the hike up and down to the gorge from Tilcara is more stunning than the canyon/gorge itself.Once you are passed the entrance the hike along the river to the natural waterfall is cool as you can see a myriad of differently colored stones in the river bed. The natural waterfall itself is about 10m high. On our way back we walked the walkways in the gorge back to the entrance. If you have seen others, this one isn't much different but still nice.
This is a great place to visit and you must get out of your car and walk leisurely inside. But, this whole region is full of just so many panoramas and interesting villages to visit. Go slowly. Stop at the different villages. Get out and see the vistas. Go one way in the morning and plan your trip so that you can see things in a different light on the way back. Don't miss the monument for the Tropic of Capricorn. While it is not a lot to see, just standing there is special.
You can also come here by car, but I advice you to do the whole hike and not the last 100 meters. In the beginning it is will go up rapidly but after a while it will become flatter. Make sure you have enough water with you. You cannot buy water on route. The strange thing is that up there, you will find a bathroom with toilet paper and runing water. Ontheffing end you see a small waterfall. The Lonley planet mentioned here go for a swim but the locals prefers that you do not do this. They depend on this water.
since the lonely planet made a great description we hike up there but were a bit disapointed, the place is not really impressive and they want to charge you to enter.
Devil's throat is about 75 mins walk fromTilcara town, the view on the way is absolutely stunning and once you get there you will walk for another 15 mins along a river bed to reach a beautiful waterfalls in a peaceful and amazingly beautiful spot...a must do if you travelling in the quebrada de humahuaca
The throat is amazing. Only 7km from Tilcara town. A very peaceful place. Set in the middle of a mountain range. Highly recommended.Energia increible. Solo 7km de Tilcara. Es un lugar muy pacifico y tranquilo. Un sitio en el medio de una montana. Es altamente recomendable.
I expected more based on available pictures. costs 10 pesos to enter. There is not much to see around Tilcara, so do visit, it's a nice hike.. or take a taxi
