Fascinating tour of Irish history, and very good value. Surrounded by pubs these days, which is handy after climbing several flights of stairs!
Our visit to Donegal Castle was a self guided tour. It is well maintained and very interesting. Make sure that you walk around the castle and down the street to see the back side of the castle.
An excellent place. Very significant in the history of Ulster. Very friendly staff and extremely informative.
We enjoyed visiting Donegal Castle. The steps up to the second floor are daunting: narrow and twisting. It was worth it, as the main room is fascinating. There is a 3rd floor museum, too. What I appreciated were "regular" stairs down and out!
We visited the castle during a short break in Donegal in September 2014. The castle has been well restored although you are struck by the modern addition associated with health & safety regulations. There is a lot of reading to understand the history of the site through the centuries and you can feel that you are steping back in history wandering through its halls, rooms and stairways. It is a small site and we meandered within its walls in less than an hour. There is an entrance charge and somehow you are expecting a little more than just being let roam free. Well worth an hour of your time. When your finished, do pop in the Old Castle Bar next door, it too won't disappoint.
Donegal Castle is included in Heritage Ireland cards, so stopping here on a rainy afternoon in town was a no-brainer. It's a great location--about 30 seconds walk from the town square, and there is a super little pub right across the street. The staff were friendly and information panels gave a pretty good description of what life was like in the castle.
There was no one there to ask questions too maybe better in holiday time was just given a photocopied piece of paper to read and let to go by yourself
We enjoyed the castle and found it reasonably priced. They had signs and descriptions posted throughout. Nice trip back in history and we truly enjoyed it!
a fascinating glimpse into the past .very narrow staircases which might make it difficult to climb for elderly patrons ,impossible for fully armoured invaders .
Driving around Donegal was fun. It was a sunny day and the countryside was beautiful. The castle was simply a stop along the way and worth while from that perspective.
