We a local lady take us underground in Ellinwood. It was fascinating and even my three daughters aged 9, 7 and 5 liked it.
I have family in Ellinwood and so we go there a lot. I went through the tunnels when I was a kid, but didn't really remember it. My fiancée and I were traveling and decided to set up an appointment to tour the tunnels. They were so much fun! There isn't a lot left, but it really gives you a great view of what small towns were like. Most towns, especially Kansas, had these undergrounds, but very few were kept. Really neat part of history.
The Ellinwood underground is on the Santa Fe Trail not far from Great Bend, Kansas. They are both great places to visit. Ellinwood is a small farming town that was built as part of the Santa Fe Railrood expandtion westward. It is still the same size 1 mile square with red roads and all. There is not alot downtown but City Hall , some gas stations and the old Santa Fe RR station. Tour the tunnels andvisit history alond the Santa Fe Trail.
