We did the Taos Box on the spur of the moment, since there hasn't been enough water until this week. Britt and Cathy were experienced and knowledgeable about the Rio Grande, the flora and fauna and the lore. It was exciting but we knew we were in great hands. Our group of six was diverse and all there to have a great time. Mission accomplished!
New wave rafting went above and beyond to give a wonderful experience for the whole family. They allowed our underage boys to raft since my husband and I have boated with our boys since they were able to sit. My mom wanted to go and they met all our needs. Our guide Neil was fun and informative and very safe. I would definitely pick this company when rafting it was a great experience. My 5 year old said "It was the best time of his life!" My kids also enjoyed the snack at the end and so did I.
I have some adventurous people in my family who did not want a guide along for our first rafting experience out west. We've done several types of float trips over the years - raft floating, canoeing, etc and had always dreamed of doing a rafting outting while on vacation in the west. This summer, all of our kids were finally old enough that we felt we could do it on our own! (Plus, our large family found it much more affordable to choose this option. :-)Kathy was great - setting us up with funyaks, taking us to the drop off location and telling us landmarks to make note of (and watch out) for along the way. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 hour float. Some areas of minimal "rapids" that made us all yell with fun and excitement - and mostly very calm water that gave us no problems at all, and allowed for jumping out and swimming if we wanted.Overall - it was a great experience.Lori K.
New Wave Rafting provided a great day of fun and lots of memories for our family. Very knowledgeable rafting guide, great lunch, beautiful scenery....we couldn't have asked for a better trip. The river was a little low and slow but that didn't stop us from having a great time that our 11 and 9 year old sons are still talking about. The New Wave Rafting staff was great .... from helping us pick which trip was the right one for us (all day rafting), to getting us ready, making us lunch, and getting us home safe and sound. Would definitely recommend this company and this trip and absolutely will do this again the next time we're in Taos!
My parents booked a rafting trip for our family of six. We had two seniors (65/70), two adults and two teenage boys (15/16). Jessie was our guide - he was very friendly and knowledgable. All of us went on the lazy part of the river first. It is basically a calm 2-ish hour float trip with nice views. Wear a hat and sunglasses, bring sunscreen or wear a long-sleeved outdoor shirt. We stopped for lunch which consisted of chips, salsa, watermelon and deli sandwiches. Lemonade and water were provided as well as oreo cookies. At the drop off point, the seniors got off the boat and let the rest of us continue down “the Racecourse”. This is a faster flowing section of river with some nice rapids. The river was flowing at about 900 cfi and the rapids were Class 3-ish. We got splashed around a little but nothing too scary. We felt very safe the entire time and would definitely recommend this trip for beginner to semi-experienced rafters. Experienced rafters might be a little bored unless the river is flowing at 1400+.
A great river guide makes the trip loads better, and Britt was one of the best. Our guide Britt gave us fun and interesting tidbits of info all along the way. He also let us float and let the river just carry us, when the going was nice and easy. Some river trips I've taken, the guide's main approach was just top make us paddle fast the whole way. Britt knew a better way to run the river. His approach had a lot more finesse. Before we ran a tricky spot, he'd back us into an eddy so we could study it in advance and plan how we'd do it.Plan to jump out of the raft and float on your own! What fun, floating down the Rio Grande with your toes in front of you, and all the others just watching from the raft.We met them at a place about 20 miles out of Taos. They loaded us in a bus, and took us upriver. When we pulled out at the end, we were right back at our car.
This was not our first trip through the wild and scenic stretch of the Rio Grande known as the Taos Box, but it certainly could of been the best ever. Not all river trips are the same and having a professional well trained and knowledgeable guide (Britt had over 31 years experience) equipment in tip top shape, clean and well maintained vehicles certainly helped to put us at ease and confident. Lunch was great and at the end of the trip the only thing that we wanted was to do it again!
New Wave Rafting is first rate, A+, Blue Ribbon! You know you are in good hands with truly experienced guides. I really did not want to go on this adventure with my husband and two teen age sons, but the younger insisted. I had a total blast! The water was beautiful. The wildlife was amazing. But the most important aspect was the true feeling of confidence in our guide. I felt 100% safe and confident in her knowledge and expertise. I am so glad I went! I will never forget the great time I had with the people at New Wave.
What an incredible day our family had with the whole crew but especially our guide Kathy! Our girls are 10,8, and 6 and were excited and able to handle the trip. The river was exciting enough for the whole family. Kathy was a wealth of information about the area and all the plants and animals. We will most definitely be planning another trip with them next year!!
We appreciate the rating chosen by the reviewer, and regret that the events described detracted from the over-all experience. We ordinarily admit children of 6 years of age and up on this moderate (Class 3) trip, and observe that the great majority of children have a wonderful time, even better than their parents! But, as the reviewer stated, a trip that features rapids is not for all kids, and parents should carefully consider the particular capabilities of their children. New Wave Rafting Co. does offer an easier trip, which we describe as being appropriate for families "...with timid or aged family members"
