This is such an incredible resource for the area, I can't imagine being in the area and not doing this tour, especially if traveling with anyone new to Puerto Rico. We went at night in order to see the Biobay, and reservations are required, so book early if you don't want to get shut out. The tour itself lasts about 2 hours and is a great experience. The view from the lighthouse is amazing, where you also listen to a presentation on the science of the bay and the bioluminescent organisms (I'm a biologist, so I probably enjoyed this part more than most, but still, it was really good!) You then travel down to the biobay and walk along a nice boardwalk where you have sticks to disturb the water and see it light-up. My daughter, age 4, was over the moon about it all. Finally, you go a bit through the forest to the shore, where you look for termites (we saw a giant nest!), copepods, coqui, and maybe even a Puerto Rican boa if you are really lucky. As for a way to see the biobay, this beats the kayaks hands-down. I've found the kayaks to be generally poorly organized. Plus, it is not trivial to paddle in the darkness up a canal against the current without constantly banging into the trees / other kayaks, especially when the canal is filled with multiple kayak tour groups and is, simply, too crowded. There's no way I would have taken my daughter to the biobay via kayak, so I was thrilled to find this as an option.
My husband and I took the tour they offer at night to see part of the Bio Bay and other attractions. For the cost we were very satisfied and our tour guide was awesome, very knowledgeable of his surroundings. For the Bio Bay all you can see is where the mangroves are at and with the stick they give you, you can move the water and splash and you can see the changing color blue all around. For us a few minutes was more than enough...if you plan to take pictures don't bother..better to enjoy the moment than try to take pictures you cant see....
If you like tours where you can learn about local ecosystems, you must do this tour. I went to the 2pm english speaking tour. Karina was our guide and did a wonderful job explaining things along the way.
这个地方很棒,但是需要预订。我建议网上预订,这样的话就可以选择英语或者西班牙语导游。如果带小孩的话,要一直在他们周围。有电车带你逛公园。
Educational and interesting. The best part of this tour is the view from the light house - you can see the stars clearly in the dark of the night. We also saw the moon moon coming out and full - what a beauty. However, the full moon hampered what we could see in the bay the planktons. Note: there are 3 stops on this 2 hour tour and older folks can get tired by the time they get to the third spot. The private environmental tour company is worth supporting.
Visited the park twice in one day, first for the daylight lighthouse/mangrove tour and again for the night time tour of the biobay and lighthouse. Biobay tour takes you along the boardwalk at night to see the biobay, not too bright if the moon is out but still worth seeing if you are in the area. Limited tours in english-make a reservation in advance. Small groups, great staff. Great way to support the park systems and the people trying to preserve these areas. Look forward to visiting their other location next visit. http://www.paralanaturaleza.org/home-eng.html
Visited Las Cabezas de San Juan on 11/14. Educational tour done at night to observe the nocturnal inhabitants as well as the bioluminescent bay which was one of the most wonderful things to watch. Magnificent experience with excellent tour guide.
The evening Bio Bay tour was boring...loved the trams but overall boring and the glow is gone...they say it is because of all the evening light around the area but really those little glow bugs are just not reproducing so much in the bay...we could only see them in the areas close to the mangroves.
