I visited the Historical Society last week and was given a fabulous tour of the mansion and the history of Fall River by Sue. I'm a history buff and just learning about the families who lived in the mansion over the decades was just delightful. I could have listened and asked questions for hours. I next went to stay at the Borden house for the night but the Historical Society tour was the highlight of my time in Fall River.
If you are interested in Fall River history this is the place to visit. They have a Lizzie Borden display. History of the Fall Rive line which were steam vessels running from Fall River to New York City. History of the cotton mills thrived in the 19th and early 20th century. It was once known as "the cotton city" Michael the curator is very knowledgeable about Fall River history. They have a lovely gift shop. Beautiful gardens and a tea room that is open sometimes you would have to call to check on that.
We made a 'pilgrimage" to Fall River after the death of our friend and neighbor Robin Woodbridge, the Captain of the HMS Bounty, which was docked for so many years in Fall River. The museum has many artifacts, pictures, and scale models of famous sailing and steam ships. Great visit, not to be missed.
Located in another Gilded Age house museum, we visited on the first day that the house was open for its holiday decoration exhibit, so it was quite crowded, but we still got to see some very interesting installations about the Lizzie Borden case (including her recipe for meatloaf) and other aspects of Fall River's past. Even the curator was on hand and was exceptionally gracious to answer my wife's questions about the Lizzie Borden case, which was something of an exceptional opportunity given that no one knows more about it than does he, all while he had to meet and greet the many visitors. Nevertheless, it was a splendid visit.
We visited the Historical Society a couple of years ago while visiting the area and toured the Museum. We were very impressed with the information about the Fall River area past and the detail with which it is maintained by the staff. Others have mention the Lizzie display and information about her and the info on the people of Fall River and their lives in general. On this trip we were mainly after some items from the museum gift shop. The Christmas stock is set out and they have a large selection of books on the local history. The shop also has a selection of victorian era jewelry and gifts.Although little was blooming the last week of October the garden is beautiful in the spring and summer. They are a popular place for weddings and parties and we understand they had a very successful lecture and music series this year on the grounds. If you are going to be in the area in the summer be sure to check their events calendar.
We stopped in Fall River to see the Lizzie Borden exhibit at the Fall River Historical Society after a weekend in Cape Cod. Unfortunately, you can only go on a guided tour and we would need to wait and hour and a half for the first tour. A phone call would have saved me a lot of disappointment.
In Fall River, MA, there is an Iwo Jima Memorial in a park like setting, close to the water. Close by, there is a carousel in a windowed building, but didn't get to that today. The Iwo Jima Memorial is huge, really nice..Bricks all around it with names of service men & women with dates and mentioning of the wars they were in and the medals they have been given.....I have been to the one in Washington, DC also. The one I visited today was in a park that looks like it's being done over; new sidewalks, etc. It's right next to the water's edge, a couple of benches to sit on..A few people were walking the water's edge on the sidewalk and some people were sunning themselves on lawn chairs that they brought themselves. It's a nice area, a 2 second walk from Jerry Remy's Sports Bar & Grille in Fall River, MA....
I Love this museum especially at Christmas. They deck the halls and all the rooms with the wonderful magic of Christmas. This old Victorian Mansion is such a wonderful treat for the soul. This place stirs the imagination at Christmas and all year long. My favorite time is of course Christmas time. I have gone to the Newport Mansions and they are great but this is a warmer and much more heart fulfilling stop. Beautifully decorated trees and amazing Victorian décor. The cost for admission at Christmas is usually FREE. And the hard work put into the rooms show the love that the curators and volunteers have for this old place. As for us Downton Abbey lovers, well one visit to the gift shop will fill a lot of your Downton Abbey Fashion desires! ~~Love the place~!
Visited and got a great tour . WE got in half price because one of the floors was closed.it was still very interesting and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. There is pieces from the history of Lizzie Borden and the steamship authority... Worth the visit
I've toured many historic homes over the years, but this one was truly enjoyable. The house was beautifully decorated for the Holidays .... with each room having its own Christmas tree and unique decorations. The bedroom was my favorite, cozy, warm and inviting. The volunteer guides were informative and did not hold back on providing detailed information about the home (including, of course, Lizzie Borden). From the house tour we went next door to the Easton Tearoom for Afternoon Tea. Another beautiful historic home, decorated for the Holidays, and staffed by informative, considerate workers. The food was good. The tea was good. The atmosphere was wonderful! I would recommend this 'day out' to everyone.
