St. Peter's is like it's own collection of Bernini works. This one is just as spectacular as all the others and is easily missed when moving through the Basilica. Keep an eye out!
St. Peter Basilica is filled with so many gems that if you move quickly, you might just miss many. This monument has to rank side-by-side with La Pieta among the many beauties of St. Peter Basilica. Don't miss.
Inside St Peters basilica, a wonderfully masterful monument. If you have queued to get into the basilica, then I would recommend you find this piece of art that Bernini designed for Alexander VII
The Tomb of Pope Alexander VII is a sculptural monument designed and partially executed by the Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini. It is located in the south transept of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. Worth spending a moment here.
This is probably my favourite piece of art in rome. Definitely worth taking the time to study fully. Read up on the symbolism of each element. Such as England being the thorn in an angels foot.
Very pretty here. I loved the monument it is amazing to think that people built these beautiful structures!
The tomb of Pope Alexander VII is one of the many masterpieces of Bernini inside St. Peters's Basilica. Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to design the monument, but died before the construction begun. It was made between 1671 and 1678, showing Alexander kneeling in prayer with four marble figures surrounding the Pope. In the back are images of Prudence and Justice, the traditional symbols and in front are Clarity and Truth. Clarity is holding a child in her arms and Truth's left foot is resting on a globe, precisely over England. It is believed that it is related to the religious differences with Protestant England. Below Alexander there is a dramatic figure of Death. It is a bronze skeleton with a hourglass in his hand and his face hidden under the fold of the Sicilian jasper. This jasper is made of a more modern kind of red marble and contrasts beautiful with the white marble of the figures. Most of the work was done by his assistants, because of the old age of Bernini, but you recognize his magnificent design. The sculpture of Pope Alexander VII is bare headed, which stands for wisdom and purity.
All the statues and work of Art inside St Peter's Basilica is breath taken beautiful! And this monument adds to it as well! With all its details in its full glory it is marvellous! Make sure you keep your camera handy!
Located inside the Basilica of St. Peter, this is one of the most beautiful sculptures that can be seen inside the church itself by excluding what is in the Vatican treasures, this work is fantastic and above all you can visit it free of charge being placed inside the Basilica, however this is one of the works of the genius of Bernini.
Such an intricate monument by Bernini. It's dedicated to Pope Alexander VII tomb. Keep your camera handy as you want to take pictures of Bernini's last work.
