The walk around the cemetery is old and turn of the century craftsmanship at its best. Not morbid at all. Unique.
Interesting cemetery with beautiful views of Ferndale. Local history represented throughout. Well maintained. Walking uphill is worth it for the views.
You can hike up the hill or drive the road through the cemetery if you're not up for the climb. The views are lovely, but visiting the cemetery also makes the history of the town more personal and is an opportunity for some quiet reflection during your trip.
healthy uphill walking on paved walkways, varied ornamental carvings around graves, incredible views and wildlife
The Ferndale Cemetery is a charming site from another time of American history. It is fascinating to read the gravestones and well worth the hike to the top of the hill to view Ferndale from above and the Eel River Valley beyond.
Lots of history here with folks that founded this town. Not only do you enjoy reading the headstones and dates, but the walk to the top is a good aerobic workout. Some good photo scenes from the top especially when the rhododendrons are blooming.
Just so scenic! The cemetery is huge and has been used in several movies. People around town saw our cameras and kept insisting that we had to see the cemetery. So we did and it was very cool.
I've been to a lot of cemeteries, and I've never seen one like this. The views from up on the hill are worth the walk, but take your time and enjoy the historical stones as you go. Really lovely spot.Accessibility: none
The walk is a bit challenging if you have any walking issues, as it is hilly. Locals go there to walk their dogs and exercise, besides the more obvious reasons. Historic burials, as well as, current. Military designations. Good variety of monuments. A chance to thank those that did the "heavy lifting" to make the US a great place...not enough left alive to do the same today.
what I love is the grave yard sits on a hillside and you can drive through it, theres plenty of charm.
