We ended up in Ferrol by default on our cruise, and whilst not overly impressed with the town itself - clearly suffering badly in Spain's economic crisis - the Naval Museum was worth a visit.Half of it was free to look around, the other, the newer part, was only 2 euros for the under 60s and 1 euro for oaps, so worth paying for!It was light, bright and had lots to see. Descriptions were all in Spanish in the main part, but had English translations in the newer part. The newer part was housed in a wonderful vaulted brick building. In the older part there were lots of models to see, exhibits relating to life on board, development of communications between ship to shore, canons, cannon balls..... The newer part, showed how boats/ships were and are built. We really enjoyed our visit.
The naval museum is free and is as good as any other naval museum I've visited (except maybe Greenwich). There were all kinds of exhibits ranging from small intricate model warships to large bits of ships. Well worth a visit. The museum of naval construction is on the same site and is also very good and worth a visit with several working models and a mock up of a 17th century gun deck and the equivalent from a late 20th century warship. The entry fee of 1 euro is a real bargain.
