The Bächle are generally small shallow gutters that run throughout Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), carrying water from the Dreisam river. They are a great asset to the city in summer, providing a play thing for children, a cool place to stick ones hot feet after shopping or while drinking a beer and an often used as impromptu dog baths. They are also a menace to unaware pedestrians who can often be seen falling into them and cursing. This is so common in fact that a local legend states that if you fall in to the Bächle you must marry someone from Freiburg. One year the ex-chancellor Helmut Kohls car was driven into one while he was visiting the Pope, leading to an embarrassing scene. These Bächle are a nice feature of a nice city, but I would not fly all the way form Australia for example, just to see them, they are just not exciting enough.
I don't know how these drains got listed as an attraction. I found them more of a hazard. However we did see one dog that couldn't keep out of them, so I suppose he found them attractive.
Read about these little water channels before my visit to Freiburg then forgot all about them till I saw them all over the town. Part of the history but could also be a hazard to the unwary pedestrian
One of the unique features of the city of Freiburg are the Bachle. A leftover from the old ages, the Bachle are nothing more then very clean ditches that carries water throughout the city. A rather lengthy tripping hazard, the summer time reveals alternative use for these ditches. An impromptu playground for pets and children, the Bachle can be a source for some funny entertainment. You don't need to make special travel plans to see the Bachle as they are located throughout the old town.
Freiburgs "Bächle" (small rivers) are a must see. But be carefull, if you step in on of the Bächle you have to marry a person from Freiburg ;)
The medieval water drains of this city are better enjoyed while listening to a local guide. You can stroll around the city inner core, follow the bachle and hear very nice old stories about the city and the use it's citizens make of this drains during the summer.
Not at all sure that they can be described as an attraction, but they are pretty unique I suppose. Really need to be aware of them when wandering the streets, any unexpected distraction could result in a fall. Good to see something different, though.
Hot temperatures (+35 Celsius) are usually not the best set-up for making city trips or longer walks. In Freiburg its different: Those little "rivers" in the cities kept our kids occupied for many hours letting us parents do some shopping, sight seeing etc. We also bought some small hand-made wooden boots that they would let run down the "Baechles" . So much fun for them, so much piece for us.
