I came here for a meeting this visit, but I came once before a couple years ago just as a tourist. Both times I was impressed by the loveliness of the place and careful maintenance of the buildings and grounds. The Pavilion is a great choice for meetings/gatherings. Melchers was a very talented artist and his home and studio are definitely worth a visit!
We visited the welcome center by accident just because the place was so beautiful and ended up taking family pictures here! Amazing gardens! The buildings are all beautiful! It is worth visiting!
We had not been to Belmont for over 5 years. Tour guide was very good. House is a circa 1900 artist residence full of paintings and many Dutch furniture pieces. Studio includes artist tools of the trade and a wide range of Melchers art. Estate sits on a magnificent hill overlooking the river. Probably prettiest in spring or summer, but we had a glorious rare February day. Film is a must-see before exploring the house and grounds.
We walked the grounds (they were preparing for a wedding so could not go in some of the places). What a beautiful place! The house is amazing, the grounds are gorgeous. It was a beautiful autumn day, exactly what a place like this house and grounds are meant to showcase. You will love it!
I have lived in F-burg for over 72 years. My out-of-town guests love to visit Belmont. Lovely house, studio, beautiful walking trails and gardens. Also have a fantastic gift shop. You will not be disappointed with your visit.
I have been on numerous house tours, but this one was different. This one is of Gari Melcher, a painter who did many fascinating paintings. If you love art, you will love this place. The house and gardens are great also.
Gari Melchers is an overlooked American artist whose major works will be recognized and whose previously unseen pieces will astound! All showcased in his lovely home and studio. Definitely should be a "Must See" on your Fredericksburg visit list.
When Gari Melchers and his wife passed away, they left their home, intact with all of its furniture, art and other memorabilia to the local University of Mary Washington which overseas the current operation. Visitors are taken through the house and grounds by volunteers who tell the story of the Melchers and their lives not only in Fredericksburg (summers mainly) but also New York (main residence) and abroad. A lovely place that provides a glimpse into the history as well as the art of a very fine and prolific American artist.
Thanks so much for visiting! Our guides love what they do. We're thrilled you enjoyed your tour. Come again!
Very nice place and good tour. You get a good sense of life of a well-off artist in the 20-40s...but still be intriqued to learn more. It is a well maintained property and quite nice walks around. Some nice paintings which made you think about how he was considered at his time and now.
