This is one art museum you won't want to miss! The Andrew Wyeth Collection is not only extensive but absolutely captivating. I appreciated the exhibit which honored veterans seriously injured overseas - that was very moving.Don't forget to go to the First Floor Gallery to see the most amazing watercolors! The collective artist talent in that room is overwhelming!Thank you, GCMA, for providing such dignified and meaningful art for visitors!
They have an amazing amount of Andrew Wyeth. They also have some paintings that we wondered why they were in a museum. Since it's free, it's definitely worth the 1/2 - 3/4 hours to see it.
We stopped in on a hot day in August and found a true gem in the Upstate area. The people there were friendly and knowledgeable. We only toured one of the three levels of art, but will be returning again soon. They also have what they call "Two O'Clock Sunday" where every Sunday at 2:00pm they have an event. And - it's all free. Great place to hang out and enjoy art.
We visited the Greenville County Museum of Art during a recent daytrip to Greenville. Though completely unknown to me previously, it was a stop well worth making. Part of an arts and cultural complex of newer and restored buildings, it houses a fine collection of works by regional artists. There is a particularly strong collection of painting and sculpture by African American artists. But the crowning jewels of their collection clearly are the Andrew Wyeth watercolors, the largest grouping I have ever encountered. They are carefully lighted and well displayed. If you are in or even passing through Greenville I strongly recommend a stop at this museum. Admission is free but there is a small charge for parking.
Not a bad seat in the house. Great local talent in a variety of productions. Parking is available in a garage across the street.
We were in Greenville participating in an antique show at the Greenville County Museum of Art. It us an absolute treasure. Located in a park like area with other museums and attractions nearby, the museum is chock full of wonderful art including a supern Andrew Wyeth permanent exhibit much of which has been acquired from proceeds from the annual antique show. The buildings architecture is most interesting. Large, bright open galleries allow visitors to have wonderful opportunities for viewing the art. A very worthwhile addition to your list of must-see's in Greenville.
I learned about this small museum having a collection of Andrew Wyeth paintings 20 years ago. Things got in the way of visiting there until now. Not only does it have his paintings, it is the largest collection in the world! I was in heaven. Also enjoy the Edgefield pottery collection as well as many other exhibits of mostly southern artists.
The museum was a great size for an hour's worth of time to walk through. It was not overwhelming but still provided some wonderful artwork to look at.
We were fortunate to see the Andrew Wyeth exhibit. It was very good. This is a nice local museum and worth a visit.
Fairly small for an art museum but the exhibits were wonderful. Kids enjoyed examining the different styles of paintings and learning about expressionism in various forms. Staff were a bit stodgy but most are in museums.
