The highlight of our day in Gloucester was walking along the breakwater! It was a beautiful view and great people watching. We didn't think it was too hard to get to, but we also used a GPS. As we read in reviews, we ignored the private signs. Parking was hard to find, but free. We probably spent a couple hours there-- not a whole day event, but definitely not a quick stop either. I wore a dress, which I would not recommend because the wind gets very strong out there!
We drove by it twice do to the big Private Road sign sitting at the entrance. We opted to ignore the sign and try to find the lighthouse. We never made it. The roads twisted and the directions were so poor we got lost in this unfriendly neighborhood that clearly wants the tourists to stay away. What a shame.
My wife's father was the keeper at Eastern Point Light in the early 1970s, so this was a trip down memory lane for her to go back 40 years later. The light house is on a point of land in an exclusive area. There are lots of 'private' signs, but just be respectful, go slow and you will be rewarded with a view of beautiful light house and surrounding area.
It was a little hard to find the lighthouse. The drive is beautiful, lots of mansion type homes in the neighborhood. At one point there are signs saying members, or residence only. You will have to ignore those and travel to the end of the road to get to the lighthouse. It is in a very pretty place along the shore. However, tourists are not allowed past the gated fence, since it is occupied by a family. But still awesome to see and take pictures of.
Hard to find but the view is worth the walk. Make sure you have suitable shoes for walking on the breakwater
While occupied in the '70s by two families, this lighthouse is now automated. There is also a light out at the edge ofthe harbor operated by this lighthouse. Unfortunatelytourists are not allowed past the fenced enclosure.
lol had to pretend I was a yacht club member to gain access due t the private roads/drive to get to the lighthouse. The lighthouse wasn't so interesting(very small in stature) BUT walking along the peir wall and seeing the open un-obscured ocean view was well worth the finagling.
Take the drive through a residential neighborhood to visit this lighthouse. Wear good shoes and walk the jetty to end. Beautiful view!
Really nice place for a walk and to take great pictures. Need to watch your step while walking there and near the water. Even though you can't get into the light house your still able to take nice pictures outside of it.
The entrance to the road leading up the lighthouse says its private but there was no security at all to say otherwise. It seems to be a hidden place that the locals enjoy fishing at. Wear some good tennis shoes as its a bit rocky and the trail the breaker is uneven. There is a small parking area that says to pay to park and take a ticket, but there was not a ticket box and the pay box looked broken, besides it was not policed at all anyway. Its a very nice place to take a stroll along the break water and get some good pictures of the lighthouse and ships. Take the time and drive over you will enjoy it as part of your adventures.
