We were looking to get out of the house on a Saturday and decided to take a short trip over Golden. I had never noticed the Astor House, but it was near the top of the list when I searched Golden CO attractions. This is a cool step back into history and well worth the $3 admission. It's pretty quick, and you can see the whole thing in 20 minutes, or stay for probably an hour and looks at all the photos and guides and such.
Tour was on your own, with buttons to play audio and some signs. We were hoping for more insight about this house and town and its history and stories.
Worth the visit during tour times and to better understand what things were like 150 years ago. Great special events, and only 2 blocks from the Clear Creek History Park.
We enjoyed this house. Lots of historical information and recordings to listen to. We enjoyed it very much.
It was quite interesting to see how they lived at the turn of the century in Golden, and the fact that it was the first hotel, it would maybe have been better had it been a guided tour, but I think it is run on a volunteer basis (not sure). The young lady on the front desk was very helpful and seeing all the old furniture and cooking utensils was very interesting I would not recommend this attraction with young children.
Enjoyed this lovely House from the past ! Beautiful look back in time . Can see the mountains and part of town from the balcony.
This is a small early west boarding house. It is quite charming and does not take a lot of time to see. The fee is very small to enter. It reminded us of all the boarding houses from the old west shows that we watched as kids. It is worth a visit. The young lady on duty when we arrived was quite nice and helpful. She went out of her way to give us directions and help. Worth a visit.
Very worthwhile to learn about yesteryear lifestyle and history. This building was saved from being demolished to be a parking lot by the smart citizens of Golden. Wonderfully restored and well researched to recreate the era. Get the ticket to include a visit to the museum (Golden History Center) across Clear Creek, both for $5.00.
I was disappointed to learn they didn’t have guided tours, but we went anyway and were impressed. They have buttons to push and you can hear all the stories of the colorful characters and their way of life, while walking around the rooms. In a way it’s better than a guided tour. The woman at the front desk was charming and the view from the balcony was nice. We got the combo ticket and are looking forward to the Golden History Museum. You don’t have to visit both in one day. The reason for the eucalyptus seed curtain on the bedroom is interesting as is the reason they have jar lids under the feet of the bed. Cool place, fun and informative.
I wouldn't call this a must-see, but it's definitely got some interesting things about it. The lady at the front was helpful and friendly, very reasonable price to get in. I enjoyed learning about how it got started, the way it changed over the years, and imagining the different people who stayed there through their automated tour system. They don't have tour guides (it doesn't seem they can afford them), but they have little buttons to push with pre-recorded bits of trivia and history, so you could get quite a bit of info from them if you've got the patience to listen to all they have to offer.
