We returned for mass today -- the first time after a very, very long removation -- and the church is even more beautiful than it was in the past. And much brighter. Also, it has recently been named a Basilica. Well worth a visit.
tried to visit this absolutely beautiful and towering church on a hill above downtown Guelph but the doors were closed with signs about renovations. When I asked locals, they said they didn't know when it was going to reopen. Perhaps it is open on weekends only? Massive.
Truly a historic gem in Guelph. Much to see and the museum beside it is beginning to take off. The acoustics are sublime. Really worth attending a service. The pillars and stained glass are quite breathtaking.
This church, now a basilica, is Guelph's most prominent landmark. From most any direction you come to the city you see the twin towers and say "there's Guelph". "Catholic hill" also is home to the Guelph Civic Museum. Both the church and the museum deserve a visit.
The Basilica of Our Lady sits high atop Guelph at the end of MacDonnell Street which was named for the Bishop from Easten Ontario who knew John Galt so well that he was given the best land in all the countryside with which to build his church. And so he did, and after many changes, and just having been named a Basilica by Pope Francis, this makes tic architectural gem is a must see if you are visiting Guelph. I stopped in one morning before all the recent renovations, and was treated to a booming organ practice which tested the structure for soundness. This is a wonderful building with a soul you can feel when you enter the church. It overlooks Guelph like a beacon and seems to shout out "Here I am, come on up." You can spot it from all corners of this old city and it would be shame to visit phelps and forgo the opportunity to visit one of the mainstays of this wonderful city.
Our Lady Church is unique for this area. It was built in the European design. I am glad that restoration is being done to it. Once completed I hope that it will still have the old world feel. This is a must vist.
Check out the amazing history here, the architecture is splendid. Perfect for Guelph. Easy to get to and worth the long looks. Bring a camera.
A must see when visiting Guelph - with a beautiful view of the downtown area. It has been recently restored. Large, beautiful stained glass windows with massive columns inside. It sits atop a hill and can be seem from virtually anywhere in the city.
The church stands high on a hill and you can't help but notice it. We had to stop and take a photo of it. It is so majestic and beautiful.
Such an amazing Church. Great priests, and an amazing architectural palace. Definitely stop in if you're Catholic.
