When you look from the outside seems like a small museum, but don't be fooled, you're in a city with 7,000 years of history!! The museum is actually quite big, and very, very interesting and informative!!!! There are a lot of very ancient artifacts that were extracted from the mines!!! Besides that, most of the information is written in several languages!!!If you like to read every little thing (I do!!) I recommend 1-1,5 hours to visit it all.
I say 'Wow' because once you've been through it, you cannot believe how much information was in there!! You see the little building you walk into and assume it's just a small museum. There are a lot of exhibits and binders a long the way that provide explanations of exhibits in many languages. The multi-media exhibit about the history of salt in the Hallstatt culture was really great.
On a whim, we decided to take a quick look through this museum. Too bad we hadn't allocated more time to do so, as it was a very interesting museum regarding the history, mining, etc. of the area. Anyone who enjoys history will find this museum well worth the visit. I would love to go back and spend more time there. There was so much to see and learn.
There is a long history of people mining salt in Hallstadtt. This museum makes that history easy to understand. Just think, when Israel was captive in Egypt, people were mining in Hallstadtt.
We had a lovely time walking through the Hallstatt museum. The museum starts with the beginning of life in this area (a long time ago) and continues to present day. Very interesting hour or so!
Lots of great history about the region, and some neat interactive displays that are available in English. Definitely worth an hour, and you can get a small discount if you are staying in Hallstat.
This is a good rainy day activity. We found the museum interesting. In places, however, it was difficult to see where to go next, as the lay-out was confusing.
Initially it looks like a small museum in a small town with a few artifacts, but in reality it is quite large, with several exhibits of quality, well documented, an audio guide that adds pertienent information. This is a must see museum if you are in the region as you will understand the importance of Hallstatt in the history of humanity and the region. It also adds information or complements well the visit to the salt mines. Recommend at least one hour of visit, there is more to see than you imagine and well worth your time: it is a travel in time!
I was recently in Hallstatt and it was a rainy day so we decided to go to the museum; I'm glad we did! We spend a few hours there, they had lots of artifacts (shoes, pieces of clothing, tools) and things they found around the town and in the mines. Interesting exhibits in both English and German. I liked learning about the town's history and the fire, and how mining salt was so important to them. I would recommend coming here and spending a few hours if you have time!
The Museu Hallstatt, its important to visit and you dont spend many time to do it. Near the Markt Place.
