I fail to see what the fuss is about. Yes it's very large but that's about all. In front of it is the town square, which is nothing but a big area of concrete. What I did love about it was the view from the street behind it, when on the street looking towards it and the waterfront, THEN it was impressive.
I don't think it's pretty. Well, it is history, and history is not always pretty... It is already there, and memorials are called memorials for they are made for MEMORizing and reMEMbering, be it negative or positive. (Saying this because there is this quite popular opinion that the memorial should be removed - which I happen not to agree with...)It has its own value as one of the city landmarks, and it is a visually really noticeable part of our "downtown".Interesting fact: At the feet of the right group of fighters lies the double-headed eagle - symbol of the defeated imperial autocracy... and... the current Russian Federation national emblem.
The monument to the communist "heroes" put there in the 60s, so that crowds of people walking past - to carry out acts of prikloneniya before "glorious punitive" under the communists, who were like gods. Now, life in Russia - has changed, but left a monument, it is important today to the heirs of the сommunists - the authorities. There is trade, meetings, exhibitions and concerts. Artistic and aesthetic value of the monument for the punishers - zero, was destroyed by an old park, monument, and now just takes place. There is relatively clean, expensive shops, bus stop, beggars, there are few chairs, a few flowers, there is light at night, the police booth near the winter here gusty wind blowing. If you want to waste your time - then come.
