This fortress is surrounded whole the city. Unique construction. But difficult to visit it without a guide. Therefore, going to the little piece that possible for see.
It is a bit unexpected. The fortress has nothing to do with medieval castles. It is something relatively new, maybe one of the last samples. In fact, the "fortress" consists of plenty of forts scattered around all the territory of Vladivostok, its suburbs and some islands. Naturally, it's impossible to visit all the sites at once, or even in one day. Just a few forts are open for visitors, some sites are still used by navy. Small forts and batteries located in the downtown are well kept by volunteers, others are just torist attractions. Altogether it's definitely worth looking at.
What is called "Vladivostok fortress", but rather less than 10% of what had been a hundred years ago - is now a very serious need of restoration and other organizations, but now almost unacceptable for tourists!
An excellent museum with some interesting and quirky exhibits
Vladivostok fortress— the complex of unique long-term defensive works constructed at the end of XIX — the beginning of the XX century in Vladivostok and its vicinities. Construction of fortress was finished approximately on 2/3, because of the beginning World War I, and afterwards October revolution. On the 400 square kilometer territory, about 130 fortifications, strongholds and shore batteries were placed; they were equipped with 1,400 guns, which, however, fired not a single shot at the enemy. Its mere appearance deterred the enemy at once.Fortress belongs to number of the most powerful seaside fortresses of the world, was created by exclusively Russian military engineers and builders, soldiers, sappers. Still, in 1923, the fortress was no longer deemed a working fortification under the terms of the agreement with Japan, and the fortifications were permanently abandoned. It was only in the early 30s, after the formation of the Marine forces of the Far East, that the fortress came to the defence lines of the Soviet Union once again.Quality and durability of the erected constructions and their subsequent modernization allowed to keep the value within several decades. It served one of the reasons for which the Japanese government didn't decide to enter war on the party of Hitlerite Germany. In 1934, the Voroshilov battery was built on the Russky island, an imposing edifice of Soviet engineer-fortifiers. It took two years of construction to conduct the underground building. Concrete structures for each of the two towers reach an underground depth of 15 meters. The concrete vault of 3.5 meters can withstand a direct hit by bombs weighing a ton. The towers of the battery are connected by an underground passage of more than 200 meters. Huge battery guns weighing 51 tons could be rotated only with the strength of 10 people in the absence of electricity. Until 1997, the Voroshilov battery was a fighting unit of the Russian Armed Forces. Today, it is a branch of the Military Historical Museum of the Russian Pacific Fleet, which is particularly enjoyed today by Vladivostok schoolchildren.
Очень красивый вид. Даже не верится что была воина но по крепости с разу можно сказать что город не возьмут так просто.
I felt like a WW2 gunner... If you like WWII stuff, this is the place for you. It's outside so go when there is nice weather....
