This is a wonderful way to see Halifax Harbour for a few bucks. It's not a long trip across the harbour, but you will have a unique view. The ferry runs frequently, I think every half hour, in each direction and trust me - THE KIDS WILL LOVE IT. So some on, ride the ferry and have a little relaxed fun.
4 ferries cross the harbour all day and for the cost of a bus ticket this is the cheapest harbour cruise you are likely to find. On a nice day sit up top and enjoy the view.
Ferries leave at regular intervals to the other side of the harbour. A short trip of 15 minutes and a chance to have a look around before heading back. A low cost tour.
This is one of the best secrets in Halifax and great way to get around esp. for Cruise Travellers. 15 minutes each way across the Harbour and great views both way.
If you want to avoid the parking issues in Halifax itself, park across the water and catch a ferry over.. a fast regular service that only takes a matter of minutes to cross the water to Halifax. Also used as a popular route by commuters, you might want to avoid the main 'rush hour' periods as it gets pretty busy .. though still more fun that being stuck in traffic crossing over bridges!
I always encourage visitors to Halifax to take a ride across and back on the Ferry. The only glitch is not obvious to new people where to get a token and the fact that you'll probably need change to make it happen. When the weather is nice, ride up top. If on a weekend, park your car on the Dartmouth side and take the Ferry over to Halifax for the day.
We stayed in Dartmouth where the hotels are less expensive than Halifax. the ferry is inexpesive and an easy way to get to Halifax. Saves on the toll to cross the bridges and the expensive parking in Halifax.
You go to the other side an visit Dartmouth. And it is very nice ride in the summer. An it runs all day so you can go walking Dartmouth. The fare is cheap an quick. Lots of seats.
The ferry can take you from Dartmouth to Halifax and back again. It gives you an excellent view of the harbour and entrance to the Bedford Basin. It costs very little to take the ferry. It does not take you to MacNab's island or into the northwest arm.
Took this on Canad day and there they had long lines that went pretty fast. the ride was fast and the view was great, and lots of wind that was enjoyable on the hot day.
