One of the best places to visit in Harrisburg. Capitol and its surroundings are pleasant to walk around. The view from State Street is great.
Walking through the capital building gives one the feeling of walking through a grand European palace. I hear that "they" couldn't build something like this today, too cost prohibitive. Italian marble, grand staircases, elaborate chandeliers...breathtaking. I strongly recommend making a tour of the state capital building part of your itinerary whether you are on vacation or you are a local!
Love visiting this place for the architecture and history. Great tour when the weather is bad and a quick walk from the parking garage.
During a recent trip to Harrisburg, unbeknownst to us was the stunning Pennsylvania State Capitol. Were were only in town for one night, but had a full day to explore the city. We were told we could take a self-guided tour of the Capitol and decided to give it a try. We're SO glad we did. We were given a brochure with information about the building and explored all the floors to get a full perspective of the architecture. The level of artistry and craftsmanship to construct this building is awesome and the people of Pennsylvania should be very proud of such a beautiful building.
Attended the Governors Inauguration, it was a ton of fun and the capitol is breathtaking. You definitely need to take a tour and suck up the rich Pennsylvania heritage!
You can see the central lobby area, but without a tour reservation you'll not see much and you'll get a formulaic grilling from the officer watching the door. Man, do I feel safe.
We really enjoyed seeing this building and taking the tour. It is really pretty and loved the huge Christmas tree! Lots of old stained glass and gold leaf along with beautiful wood.
We missed a guided tour, but thoroughly enjoyed a walk-through on our own. A guidebook at the front desk gives information on the structure and its history. A must-see if you are in Harrisburg. Worth a visit every time you are in town, as there will always be something new to see and gain from the experience.
We are Pennsylvania residents and have been lucky enough to be in and tour all other 49 state Capitols. This last Tuesday we took the rest of our local family and drove 2 hrs to Harrisburg to tour our own State Capitol Bldg. We truly did save the best one for last. The marble, gold leaf, the woodwork and paintings are truly beautiful beyond description. And to top that all off, the Christmas tree and decorations were still in place. So glad it it on the National Historic register.
This building is incredible. Modeled after St. Peter's Cathedral in The Vatican, both the interior and exterior are stunning. The recent addition to the back of the building is well-blended into the existing building and features a lovely fountain. The tour of the building is worth the time and the grounds are lovely. One of the must-see destinations if you are in the Harrisburg-Hershey area.
