this is a very cool popular lake to summer on, overnight or day trip. you can fish from shore or boat it.
Visited Holter Lake while passing through on a trip through Montana. Would love to come back and rent a boat to spend some time fishing. Bald Eagle greeted me overhead as I crossed the river coming in at Craig.
We rented a boat at the Boat Loft at the bottom of the lake and spent a day fishing , caught half a dozen nice rainbows ,a walleye and a lot of perch. Very reasonable prices and good service, they do not sell fishing licenses at marina so get them before in Helena.
This is a very popular boat ride that explores the Gates of the Mountains like Lewis and Clark saw it. Very picturesque narrow canyon with high rock walls on both sides. There are two comfortable excursion boats that leave on the hour or so.
I have done all the major west National parks on the same road trip as dropping on Holter Lake. I thought none were as startling . It had the compactness , tranquility, beauty , people but only a few . A total suprise . If ever go back t USA this will be on the agenda for a longer stay .
We had a great camp spot near the lake. It was wonderful but unless you have a boat, there are better places to camp in the central Montana area. Still, it was a great weekend with hiking options. Seeing "Gates of the Mountains" was our favorite experience that weekend.... Amazing to think Lewis and Clark was in the exact same spot many years ago...
Camped here while visiting the Gates of the Mountains and it was quite nice. I was in a tent even though most everybody was in an RV. Lovely lake very popular for fishing, nice swim areas and good hiking as well.
Had a blast fishing and taking photos around the lake.
Holter is one of those places that the locals love. From camping to boating, hiking, fishing and Kayaking. There is something here to serve the needs of everyone. It's the kind of place you can choose to park your RV or go a bit further and rough it near a creek. I was first introduced to the area as a child on Holiday with my family. When we camped in the lower campground. We eventually transplanted to the area and at least once a summer we find ourselves out with nature here.
Holter Lake was much more interesting than I expected. I went out on a small, private boat and on the big tour ship. The canyon is magnificent and the lake is unique and beautiful. I will definitely be back to camp in some of the riverside camp grounds.
