I stopped in because the place looked like a hoot. (Oh geez, now I sound old for using that phrase.) The wines have naughty names but the varieties are pretty typical - riesling, merlot, chardonnay, etc. The wines are good but not phenomenal; some I liked and some I couldn't even finish the small sample. I bought a couple bottles because, you know, it's WINE. :)The cost is $5 for something like 6 tasting samples. It's the kind of place where you'd buy wine to enjoy back at the cabin or maybe as a funny gift to elicit giggles from friends, but not necessarily good enough to order online if you're out of the area.
The winery is OK. I stopped at a number of them on my road trip, most of the ones I stopped at didn't charge for wine tasting, but expect to pay for wine tasting. I think the wine is a little over priced, but the names of the wine and the back label are somewhat funny, but not worth the overpriced wine. The customer service was good, but could be improved on.
Our taste host Kat, was very knowledgeable and personable. We are fairly rigid in our wine preferences, and she was able to suit us with the variety. We ended up with a mixed case of reds and whites.
My husband and I stopped here on our way through the hills on a couples weekend. We had a lot of fun wine and beer tasting! The staff was fun and very attentive. They have a huge selection of wine and beers to taste and the prices are very reasonable. Fun stop!
We only went in for a wine tasting, and we were so glad we did. We tried quite a few between the two of us. They had a good mix of both sweet and dry wines. We decided on a bottle somewhere in the middle of the spectrum to take home. There were two girls helping us, and they were both wonderfully knowledgeable!
I read all those bad reviews. I'm surprised, because the things those people warn about were all in the information about this winery. Naked Winery buys its grapes from elsewhere. Truth is, those good grapes cannot be grown in South Dakota. There is a fee for tasting, which is common for all the wineries I've visited. If sexual innuendo offends you, don't go here. The wine names, descriptions and tee shirts are meant to be funny, but I know that not everyone feels that sexual innuendo is funny. Okay, about our experience: my husband and I were promptly greeted by a very friendly female employee behind the bar, who explained that there was a $5 fee for tasting 6 wines and a $3 fee for tasting 4 beers. I chose the wines; my husband chose the beers. I started by telling the employee what kind of wines I like, and we proceeded from there. LIkewise for my husband and the beer. When I wanted to sip some of the beers and he wanted to taste the wines, we were given palate cleansers. Yes, the wines are a bit pricier than similar wines you can find from large producers, but the prices are comparable to any smaller vintner in the Midwest. Supporting these small wineries helps them grow, and with growth comes increased production, increased demand, and a drop in the per-bottle price. We had a good time, and I recommend this place to people who like to sample different wines around the country. Sip, enjoy, buy, drink.
Thank you for stopping and I am glad you enjoyed the wine. We do source all of the grapes from Washington, Oregon and Northern California the reason is for the wine we produce the grapes will not grow In South Dakota. We produce wine in South Dakota and Oregon. We have 4 tasting rooms Hill City , Custer SD and also Hood River and Bend Oregon please stop back at any location and enjoy our wines again.
Naked Winery is, by far, our favorite winery in Hill City. We made it a point to visit every winery out there and Naked was the only one that offered a decent selection of dry red wines. We're from the Chicago area and were surprised to discover that most South Dakota wineries feature sweet wines. Naked Winery was a welcome exception. Kim was a blast to work with. She not only knows her wines, she took time to understand our preferences, making sure we sampled wines we'd like. Fair warning to those easily offended: This is not the sort of establishment to visit if you don't possess a sense of humor. If, however, you do enjoy a little innuendo (their wine descriptions are hilarious, yet accurate) and you don't freak out at bawdy humor, you're going to love this place. We did. And yes, they charge for wine tasting. Five dollars. Seriously worth it. If you've ever visited Napa Valley you know what a deal this is. There are other wineries in Hill City that don't charge but in our opinion they don't provide a true wine tasting experience and they certainly don't offer the wide selection Naked does. If you're in the area, spend the five bucks. You'll be glad you did.
The Naked Winery and brewery offer Oregon and Washington state produced wines with names that play on sexual innuendos. All of this is in good fun! The wines themselves are quite average, drinkable but not great. The brewery does business under the "Sick 'n' Twisted" name, and has some decent micro-brews.
Always enjoy stopping by, Not a great fan of the wine here, but the service and atmosphere is great and I was completely amazed at the beer they make there. Very much worth the stop, I will definitly be back....again!
