The ranger is excellent, really knows his history and Indian lore -camping and picnic sites.150th anniversary of Battle of Droop Mountain in 2013-re-enactment
We were pressed for time so only spent time at the overlook. Great view to the north of the valley. Few options for food or fuel nearby so plan with that in mind. Probably a good spot for stargazing.
The title says it all. You must take a trip up to the observation tower. You will be blown away by the view of the mountains. It almost made me dizzy!
I was sort of disappointed at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park until my husband and I arrived Droop Mountain Firetower. Beautiful view, we were able to see miles away. It only takes about 10 minutes to see everything at overlook, but I could stay there for hours. If I knew the location of the tower earlier, I would have taken the entrance from rt. 219 instead of the main entrance. Worth the stop!
We stopped for a quick break at Droop Mt. Would recommend using the other entrance from rt. 219 instead of main entrance if only interested in tower. Very narrow road if coming to tower from main entrance. Lots of information signs on that road, May want to walk if possible. Did not go to museum.
We only ventured to the lookout tower but really enjoyed reading about the history of this mountain and the role that it played during the Civil War. Next visit we will see the rest of the park.
We hit this park on our Hillsboro/Marlinton trip. The hike (or drive) following a dirt path along the mountain ridge is easy and informative. Following along with the informational stops gives you a sense of feeling as to what happened during that battle. Let your imagination go while you are in the battlefield. The walk is about an hour depending on how many stops you make. The lookout tower is well worth the trip as the views are fabulous. We missed the museum as it was after Labor Day and it seems like almost no museums or visitors centers are open during the week. The Seneca Rocks Discovery Center was closed when we went there as well.
Have gone here many times over the years but Superintendent Mike Smith has really brought a lot of improvements to the park. It is easy to walk on trails that mark the battle lines of both Union and Confederate forces. The museum is located in a small cabin and you will find a lot of stories to read and soldier letters that tell the story of the battle. A lot of artifacts from the battle are displayed. ( If you find the museum closed, check in the office and Supt. Mike smith may be able to show you through it.Easy ride south of Hillsboro a few miles on Route 219. Cool and quiet drive or walk in the park and usually not a crowd. When you finish here try checking out Beartown park a mile or so further south on the right of Route 219.
Enjoyed the tower and seeing the fall colors of October. The scenery is beautiful from the tower. We got some wonderful pictures from the view.
This place is just natural therapy! Just sit there and be, take a look around, feel the history. We have a family reunion every year across the street and we always go to tower and just run around the park. I miss it already. If you are a traveler, go, if you are a local, I hope you know what a gem you have here.
