Sign up for trail and mountain passes before the hike!-recommend to do so at least min.3 days to a week before Hike Day due to limited space availability each day. -there are 2 passes which are required: trail passes which you can sign up online prior and a mountain pass which you should retrieve on that day from the police station on your way in to Taroko Gorge area-reach the starting point (Swallow Grotto or Yan Zi Kou) before 10AM else you might not be able to enterMy hike took me in total about 5 hours (about 1.5hrs was spent on taking photos and breaks I reckon!) and I am of average build, female and goes to the gym once a week. Even then, the hike can get pretty rough, so I'd suggest you'd do some mental or physical prep work before embarking on this trip.AMAZING EXPERIENCE, totally worth it. p.s/ there is some construction work going on right now, on the route towards the entrance. As such, it has caused some traffic interruptions that can stagnate traffic for up to half an hour, so do give allowance to your travelling time.
The views from this trail are amazing and the final part of this trail may be scary for some people but is safe. Tiring but very nice experience.
This hike is a little difficult but well worth it due to the amazing views! You need to get a permit in advanced to do the Zhuilu Old Trail as they limit the number of people on the trail each day which means it is nice and quiet!
Even though part of the trail has been closed for about 2 years, the remaining parts of the trail that are open has the best view (according to the tour guide). Definitely will go there again when the whole trail is open.
