If you are visiting Glacier National Park, this is a must see. It's about 10 miles from the west entrance and worth the short drive. We have visited Hoover Dam and were expecting this to be a really small reservoir. We were totally surprised after the drive into the backwoods to see this massive dam and reservoir at the end of the drive. Drive to Hungry Horse on Hwy 2 and look for the SMALL sign to turn to go to the Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir.
My family really enjoyed the dam.. It's beautiful with alpha creek on the other side of it! My 4 year old enjoyed it most he just went on and on about everything from the mountains to the water to the tress! He said it's his favorite place!
Definitely take the little side trip to Hungry Horse Dam. It is a gorgeous lake and a huge dam. We didn't spend a lot of time here but definitely worth the drive to see this spectacular lake.
We were staying at Apgar (West Glacier) and took a little side trip to see Hungry Horse Dam. The displays are interesting and the gentleman there was more than willing to answer questions. We very much enjoyed the little town of Hungry Horse and are glad we made the stop.
About a five mile drive off Hwy 2, but worth checking out. There is a small Visitor Center on site that gives you the history of the Dam. It's about an hours worth of adventure, but worth the visit - very scenic. There is also a recreation area that includes fishing and boating.Would recommend.
We happened upon this location and how pleased we were to have the opportunity to see the Hungry Horse Dam. It is April and we stood in awe as we watch water being released from the reservoir from three powerful jets into the river below. The shear size of the dam is worth the detour - 30 minutes to and back from the main highway including viewing time.
One if the many places we take out of state visitors. We live 4 miles from here and live it everyday!
Enjoyed many dinners here as it is close to town but off the beaten path. Nice little pond, picnic tables and pleasant trees. A nice change from local restaurants and the Hungry Horse grocery store is well stocked for travelers' provisions.
We stopped at the Hungry Horse Dam while we were in Kalispell. The drive is pretty and not too long and you can walk across the Dam. It is a very large dam and the river goes all the way to the Columbia. There are limited bathrooms outside the Visitor Center which are just really outhouses. It is scenic and worth the time.
We revisited the Hungry Horse Dam this year. It has been many years since we have been there. This Dam is the last Dam in America that you can still drive over, the information center told us. It is impressive to get out and walk across and look down. An engineering feat. Years ago you could go down into the working on the dam with a tour, now there is a virtual tour available in the visitors center. We enjoyed being there very much.
