Very nice beach though the missus prefers calmer waters and this one has (a few) waves and also a cross-current. But deserves reputation - even if I though Dois Rios was just as nice in actual fact.
Really a MUST place in ilha grande, the extension and white sand of this beach, with its waters makes it worth to walk the 30min through the forest. Be aware that elder people can be troubelled by this walk, too hot and umidity makes it more difficult!
This is my favourite type of beach. Facing the Ocean with big waves. There were surfers and body boarders. I went in without a board but really enjoyed playing in the waves! There were lifeguards on duty and people selling refreshments/hiring boards. It's a long beach bordered by jungle with hills behind it. It makes for a great view. We hiked their from Abraao. It was a really enjoyable walk, taking 2 to 2.5 hours. We saw some monkeys on the way and crossed another couple of decent beaches. To get back we got the boat (expect to get wet).I would advise not wearing flipflops on the walk. We wore trainers and overtook a lot of walkers struggling in flipflops
To get here you can walk a lot (trail) or take the boat, which is a very nice ride. This beach is famous for surfers, but you need to check the conditions prior because is not always good. Amazing! Warm water, good for walking and spending time.
This is probably the best thing to do in all of Ilha Grande. The beach is protected, so there are no facilities there, and boats can not dock there. To get there, you either do a very long and difficult hike from from town or you take a water taxi and then a smaller (but still steep) hike to the beach. Its worth it though. Pack a lunch, bring an umbrella, plenty of liquids and spend the day there.
Ilha Grande itself is beautiful, full of young people, a Babel of languages.Lopes Mendes Beach can (only) reached by boat and a quite exhausting hike over a the ridge of a mountain range (exhausting when you are 70). That hike of about 20 minutes is rewarded by a wonderful, secluded beach , wide and going for miles. Where the hike meets the beach the young ones/surfers gather but turning a few hundred metres to the left peace and quiet. Chrystal clear water, mild waves, deep enough to swim without being swept away by a current (though there were some warning flags not to swim out too far which were ignored by everyone). We found many great beaches on our 3 week long travel up from Sao Paulo via Paraty, Ilha Grande, Rio and Recife/Joao Pessoa but Lopes Mendes must rank amongst the most beautiful.
Going to Ilha Grande without seeing Lopes Mendes would simply not be right. We opted to take a water taxi from the main port which cost $40 round trip and took about 25 minutes. Upon arriving, you hike for another 20-25 minutes through the beautiful jungle until you reach the wide, white beach. The sand makes that wonderful noise beneath your toes and you know you are in paradise. There are people resting in the shade, doing yoga on the beach or just going out for a swim. The water was so perfect - crystal clear, that shade of blue everyone hopes to get and calm. We ran into a few monkeys on the walk to top it all off. What a great first day!
