Take the Gray Line Portage Glacier Cruise if you get a chance when you are in Alaska. It's about 50 miles south of Anchorage...just beyond Girdwood. It is one of South Central Alaska's most visited attractions. Use a Toursaver coupon to save half on the price.
We visited this glacier while on a cruiseline tour with Holland America. It is about a one hour drive from port to the Ptarmigan and loaded onto the boat. There was plenty of room for everybody and PLENTY of photo options. It was cool getting up close to the glacier and taking lots of pictures and hoping for the glacier to calve...it did not. The boat went back and forth about four times and everyone was happy. We were on the water about one hour. No rain on our day (August 31st) It is cheaper to visit if you have your own transportation. Opportunity to see a glacier up close. Enjoy
Took the drive out and got to enjoy the beauty of the glacier, although it is a lot farther away than I expected. Took some great photos and just enjoyed the overall peace and quiet of the area.
This tour was very informative and the captain and staff certainly had great knowledge and answered everyone's questions. Nice 1 to 1 1/2 hour tour.
Portage Glacier was a new on the water experience for us but it was informative and narrated by a Ranger. We took pictures of the glacier and enjoyed the ride. I think if they added hot chocolate etc. for purchase on a cool day it might add to the experience. The ride takes around an hour or so, and we learned something new about the area. It's was reasonably priced.
I didn't find a page for Magic Bus, so I am reviewing them here as the driver showed us Portage Glacier on the way to Whittiar.. He was amazing.. took lots of pics for us..SHowed us a salmon spawing area near Portage Glacier. I wish all the cruises would use them, instead of the rude and horrible ( and more expensive) NPS buses !!
Stopped in prior to going on cruise -- great value and got very up close to incredible glazier -- better than the excursions on cruise ship -- great deal w coupons from our hotel
Just love this kind of fantasy like place, but it's real... I used to work here and absolutely loved going to work every day... even in the snow... what else? Great people, great scenery; even served a couple of well known movie stars while I was there... Very interesting and happy to have Portage on my resume. If you are ever in Southern AK, do yourself a favor and GO THERE!!!
It should be one of the great wonders. Beautiful desplay of nature. Worst part was the cold but extra jackets we're available.
Although Portage Glacier has receded from site at the Visitor's Center, the experience was totally worthwhile. We drove along the Seward HIghway and along Cook's Inlet as well as Turnagain bay (?). There are other glaciers to be seen above the adjacent campgrounds. The Begich, Boggs Visitor's Center is amazing with glass covered walkways designed to simulate ice tunnels. We could see Portage Lake and little icebergs from the sheltered safely of the 'tunnels'. From there we took a too-short side trip to Whitter. Another story and it deserves a longer visit. Very interesting getting there for sure!
