Near the square parts of a earthen Roman castrum were discovered. Its name is derived from the former Trier electoral currency, only the old mint masters house is preserved. In the Metternicher Court was in 1773 born Prince Metternich, who later became Minister of Foreign Affairs and later served the Austrian Empire as Chancellor, in 1814/15 he led the Congress of Vienna. The fountain at the square is created by Willi Heinzen and was in 1992 a gift of Sparkasse Koblenz to the city and its citizens for the occasion of its 2000th anniversary.

Trotz seiner Größe schnell überquert. Rundherum viel Gastronomie und in der Saison entsprechend Tourismus.Der Markt findet hier regelmäßig statt. Leider ist der Brunnen immer wieder Defekt und der Platz wirkt ein wenig herzlos.

Esperava mais dessa praça pelo fato de ser ponto turístico. No entanto, ela é uma praça comum, como qualquer outra. O bom é que há algumas mesinhas onde se pode tomar uma boa cerveja alemã.
