I learned so very much in a couple of hours. Cripple Creek still produces over 1 million dollars in gold per day. Many famous people worked in the mines. A must for history buffs.
Local museums can be hit or miss. Some -- such as the one at Gunnison, Colorado -- are superb. Others are close to being a waste of time. As local museums go, this one is quite good. The displays in the assay office are the least interesting; this needs to be redone. The displays in the main building -- and the building itself (be careful on the stairs) -- are quite good. The docents seem quite knowledgeable and helpful.
Love the architecture of the old building, seeing how a depot was actually set up 100 years ago, the process of getting on the train and standing where people stood was an amazing experience. Lots of info and artifacts on the mining town in it's hay day.
Very interesting museum and the staff were very knowledgeable. Some of the outside buildings were locked and we weren't able to go inside them. There was a lot of artifacts and pictures to see. They offered military and senior discounts.
Loved the museum and the gentleman working that day was very informative, he told us a great deal of history about Cripple Creek.
This museum had something for everyone. The building was beautiful, three stories, and is located by the train depot. Loved the Victorian floor and the double staircase! Very educational for all and the museum staff was very helpful and friendly.
We really liked touring this museum and the surrounding land and buildings. There was so much to see and learn about. I would love to go back with when I had more time and take another tour. My daughter kept taking pictures trying to catch an orb (we heard it had ghost) but she was unsuccessful. When we were leaving my husband used the bathroom. He said he was looking at a picture on the wall of 2 kids sitting on chamber pots and suddenly the actual chamber pots in that room started rattling! He seemed a little shook up when he came out to the car! He may now be a believer!
This museum is packed with the rich history of the mining era. The staff make all the difference. They were very informative and pleasant to visit with. If you are doing research on the area or just family history - inquire about their collection of materials. Lots of valuable information.
We toured the old jail and read reviews from people who claimed to have seen the ghosts that "haunt" the building. We spent over two hours walking around and taking pictures.
Wonderful area museum on three floors of the old railway station. If you are into history or the unusual, it's a must see. From the skull top of a murder victim to the wooden headstone of a well-loved (pun intended) local madam to gold mining and railway lore, colorful past denizens of the area, it's worth at least an hour. If you are taking the narrow gauge railroad next door, go here first to learn the history and the train ride will be twice as interesting.
