This is a small museum. It is located in a former home that has been saved from the wrecking ball. There are really only four rooms open. The first displays furnishings from the time of the colonization of Chile. The second has some military memorabilia from the Pacific War and photos of early Copiapo. The third has some pottery and ornaments from the early inhabitants of the area. The fourth is a small collection of early mining artifacts. The good news is that it is only 600 pesos for adults and will easily fit your schedule if you have a short time to pass and are interested in the area.
Yes it is small and yes it won't keep you occupied for more than an hour, but the museum is full of little bits and pieces which make it worth a visit. As well as a history of Copiapó and the Chilean mining industry, there are also things pertaining to the mining accident in 2010 where 33 miners were rescued after 70 days underground. The original Fenix capsule is here, as is the original note sent to the surface saying the miners were still alive. These bits especially are very moving. The curator is also happy to speak to you about anything and everything, especially the library which forms part of the museum and has some really important first editions of world-famous books!
This small but brilliant museum is hidden away on a corner street of the town. Inside it has wonderful collections from the mining, military and social history of the area. It contains the original Fenix Capsule deployed by Nasa for the famous "33" and a whole room display for the miners including the original note sent up from the refuge which was very interesting. In particular, it has a library containing hundreds of historical books including original editions from Charles Darwin. It really is a hidden gem and the gentleman who runs it is extremely lovely and knowledgeable. I would urge you to visit!
