I've been visiting this home since childhood. Its fun to walk the beautifully furnished rooms. The gardens are nice for pictures. Its pretty event oriented. The attic serves as a multi purpose space.
I love touring historic homes especially at Christmas time when they are decorated for the season. In the past, I have been here for tea but this time we visited the Turner Dodge House during its Third Annual Festival of Trees. There were over 30 decorated Christmas trees throughout the three floors. Each tree is uniquely decorated. The Christmas lights fill the rooms with color and sparkle. The mansion was originally built in 1858 and has been restored to showcase its carved woodwork, crown-moulding, wood floors, and lead-glass windows. There is a nominal fee to tour the house. The first floor is handicap accessible but the upper floors do not appear to be. On-site parking with handicap spaces is available.
My husband and I went for one of the tea events they had awhile back and we had a wonderful time. They had live music, delicious tea, great snacks to go with it and afterwards we got to freely roam/tour the house and the yard. Beautiful place. :)
Lovely old house superbly preserved provides a look into the old days of Lansing. Excellent tours with interesting stories of the auto-industry family.
They have themes. I went to see the vintage clothing. I walked away learning a lot about the subject matter. They decorate for Christmas. I plan on going back.
We came to the Turner-Dodge House for the Xmas tree competition. The rooms are beautiful & well maintained. There isn't much to do in the East Lansing-Lansing area (we moved from Los Angeles), so this small hour-long trip to the house was a nice family activity.
It is a beautiful place. We did a expo there for a bridal show.
While visiting Old Town Lansing, I noticed a poster advertising an artist's fundraiser being held at the Turner-Dodge Mansion on June 3, 2012, so I checked it out... I'm glad I did! The admission to the first floor and grounds was free during this event (with refreshments provided, as well). What a beautiful place!
My husband and I planned to stop here on a 2day trip to Lansing to celebrate our anniversary. The day of our trip was a showery April day. Nonetheless, we walked through the gardens, even though they were in their very early stages of growth. In front was a HUGE tree with a wrap around bench. I would love to return in mid summer or even autumn to see the place in full bloom as shown on the website. However, the interior of the home more than made up for the drizzly stroll outside. The woodwork was exquisite! Beautiful oak trim everywhere. The staircase was truly a work of art. A number of the windows were leaded glass. The attendant on duty took us through the house room by room, giving us the history of the people, the construction of the home, and human interest stories. She was very knowledgeable and was able to answer every question I had. There was a baby grand piano in the music room which she allowed my husband to play, a real treat for him. The house offers a variety of "tea" events as well as other events. It was a nice step back in time to another era that was very refreshing.
This was the highlight of our year that included visits to Frankenmuth and beyond. Right HERE, in Lansing, we could visit an attraction that rivaled the others. For awhile. For years, you'd go into the mansion... pay a fee, then be treated to a nice tea and cookies. Beautiful. There were groups who sang, and people who led groups through the mansion. For some reason, at some point, groups of ladies would have the mansion rented out. You could visit, but the tea was FOR THESE WOMEN ONLY. You'd come in in December, and an entire floor would be rented out by sweet, white-haired women who had no idea that their groups were ruining the mansion.WE HAVE NOT BEEN BACK SINCE. We'll give it a shot this year. But if the Turner Dodge Mansion is now catering to outside groups who take over the whole thing.... NEVER AGAIN.DON'T let this become some hall to be rented out to groups. The mansion has been working great for 80 years. Change it at your peril. Dimwits.
