This is a very old, historic theater in Mesilla, NM. It shows a variety of films and most films run for a week. The films could be foreign with subtitles or very edgy with thought and emotion provocation. Once a year, they have a film festival. You will walk into a small theater with wooden seats and seats/tables to the back of the theater. They offer pastries, pies, chips, coffee, sodas and you can take them back to your seat or table. The pies are homemade. There is a personal introduction about the film and then the film starts. I really like the staff- they seem to have a lot of passion. I would definitely recommend this as a main stop while in historic Mesilla.
The Fountain Theater boasts some of the most interesting history in the area. The theater itself is run by volunteers. The building is historic and isn't the most cozy but it is quite quaint. The staff is friendly and the movie prices are cheap. The films screened are generally artsy or independent which makes for a much better experience than the terrible Allen theater company experience one might have when visiting Las Cruces. The snack bar serves freshly made popcorn and has a variety of spices, seasonings to put on popcorn, the bar next door serves wine and overall it is worth a trip to experience something different in the little city of Las Cruces.
Love Love Love this theatre! you have a choice of theatre seats, table/chairs or sofa. If you want more popcorn, you can self serve and not disturb anyone! Great place!
100 year old murals line the walls. they basically play foreign films the one we watched was french with subtitles but they do have some in English. Awesome atmosphere. I'm definitely going back if I'm ever in the area.
The oldest adobe theater with hand painted murals. In need of restoration, but the organizers present some of the edgiest and interesting flicks in the State.
The Fountain Theatre reopened in early March. It shows non-mainstream films and most are very good. The showings are 7:30 in the evening. They service, coffee, desserts and wine and of course popcorn. There are small tables and chairs at the back so you can sit and enjoy your treats or regular theatre seating to enjoy your film.
Yes, it is quirky. Yes, it is hot in summer and cold in winter, inside the theatre! But, the staff are super friendly, prices are cheapo, films are art-house, seats are comfortable, and it has character galore. And, there is an equally quirky wine bar just across the street, so you can discuss the movie afterward. The building itself is beautiful, post-card worthy. History, history, and a possible ghost. Enough said.
Actually, it's Theatre rather than Theater. Silent films, dance companies, plays, vaudeville have been at the Theatre. Full disclosure: I'm a volunteer with the Mesilla Valley Film Society which has been operating the Fountain Theatre since 1989. Theatre screens foreign, independent and documentary films. If you're not interested in a movie, come in to see the murals painted by a Fountain.
Like the value for the price considering we are retired and counting pennies, nickels, and dimes these days with the rise in local taxes.
Those of us living in Las Cruces consider this the piece de resistance of the area -- something not to be missed, if only to walk into and step back in history. In addition to interesting movies shown, the ambience provides the comfort of enjoying a decent coffee and cake, sitting at a table if one's lucky enough to get one, in the company of devotees of an occasional thought-provoking film or off-beat comedy in a volunteer-supported setting. Not everyone's cup of java, but for locals, a loved place to pass an evening!
