We traveled to this place during an off season. I cant wait to go back when they are reenacting the Life of Christ.
We did this as a family outing and enjoyed it all. Be sure to also visit Top of Mount Scott. Both is really Beautiful.
Have been before, but got enticed back for a wedding which went fairly well with a small group of about 60. Looks like about 150 would be comfortable there. Bit of a drive, but sometimes the buffalo are out, and no doubt the prairie dogs will be active as that clan in the reserve has really taken over the place. The attraction is meant to highlight the crucifixion and the decorations and buildings are somewhat interesting. If you are in the reserve, worth the few miles extra drive over to it.
We have been going there for 50 years ,more now because we have grand kids. We love to remember the old times of the pageant and the kidos just like being on stage!
Has the longest running play at Easter in the USA every year definitely worth seeing Even not at Easter has a lot of history and nice view
Was awesome to see, Very spiritual and serene. Would recommed others to take the time to visit the Holy City.
I just learned this place existed recently. We visited Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and therefore stopped at the Holy City. If you are a fan of work done in the 1930s by the WPA, it is definitely interesting to see that this too was completed by them. Basically it is a little chapel with several replicas of Christian holy sites made of red rock. The empty tomb and Golgotha were my favorites. Definitely worth a stop. And, you get to see some AMAZING prairie dog towns as you drive into the place too!
While getting ready to leave the plains (which we didn't see much of except prairie dogs) we decided to check out The Holy City. All I can say is I'm sure the locals really enjoy the services held there since the site is beautiful. Wet took some nice photos & visited the gift shop. It was worth the trip.
It was snowing the day we visited the wildlife refuge and the Holy City was closed. We plan to return in the spring of 2015 to walk through this area. If you get to this area be sure to drive though the Wildlife Refuge, we saw a lot of wildlife and had a great time getting up close & personal to the buffalo. Topped the hill and two were standing in the middle of the road, since they were larger than our vehicle, we waited patiently until they decided to move.
We enjoyed walking through it. Will love coming back for pagent. A lone buffalo was blocking the ladies room. Was desperately walking around him. He just stared at me like he was bored.
