A little after 5 pm, thousands of canary-winged parakeets begin coming in from the jungle to roost for the night. The chatter reaches a crescendo and ends by 6 pm. Almost as interesting is the crowd of tourists and locals who come to the park to watch.
This is a pretty standard park, nothing special to it. Just simply go at Sunset and enjoy the show from 5:30 - 6:00. Its lovely. No need to go any other time.
10 mins before sunset I was thinking the experience was over-stated with a few hundred birds at best. But they kept coming and coming until 10,000 was easily believable. Fun - too loud to talk to each other, kids enjoyed the 'playground', good street ice cream.
The noise the birds make as they return home is amazing. It was really lovely to see them all cover the trees, wires everything...and how they just vanish. Quite a sight...and a noise. We stayed close by so saw then every evening. Try and be around to see them at roosting time in the evening. There were stalls and carts 2mins away where we had some totally yum local food.
Be there around 17h to see the thousands of parakeets (Brotogeris versicolurus) arriving. The sight and noise is impressive. And while you are waiting for them you can use the free wifi :) Sometimes it is possible to climb the curch tower for a small fee to get a better look.
Its a nice park with birds all-over the place, especially in the evening when the small parrots come back
Sobre las 5:00 de la tarde llegan miles y hasta millones de loros a los árboles del parque Santander, es un espectáculo maravilloso que no se pueden perder.
It uses to be a really great spectacle to see the parrots coming in the afternoon to the middle square. Right now the smell is just impossible, is a torture to have to pass by. The smell doesn't come from the parrots though.
Increible espectaculo. Muy recomendado en pareja!Es muy lindo el parque y a las 5.45 llegan miles de loritos a dormir en sus arboles y el ruido es unico.
Those birds.. it is something to see with your eyes, hear, be there! photos/videos we took cannot describe it. 5 - 5:30 local time, be there!
