We ate at a Mexican restaurant right on square, subpar, but then went to the small shops and they had the cutest, loveliest clothes and jewelry. It was a nice way to spend an afternoon. I would just pick another restaurant next time. The small shops are a little expensive but they are mom and pop stores so its understandable.
Downtown Liberty is walk back in time. Liberty is the county seat of Clay county so it has an old fashion square. Lots of good restaurants line the square. I love going to the Farmers Market in the summer to purchase local grown fruits and vegetables.
I love when the farmers market is open on the square on Saturday mornings. In addition to fruit and veggies find the Mennonite family that sells the carrot cake. It's to die for!
My two boys (8 and 12) come with me to the market on Saturdays. I get fresh, tasty produce and we all enjoy a breakfast taco from the La Tienda Chiquita booth and a cinnamon roll. Great way to start a weekend!
The downtown centers on a town square with free parking all around. My wife was researching family members and we visited the courthouse in the center of downtown. Neat shops , businesses, and restaurants abound.
We had drove through Liberty many times in the past. Made a day trip with the long weekend. The old buildings. The old homes. Had a really nice walk around the square and spent some time driving around. And there is history here. The James Gang robbed the bank during the day. Why during the day with people around? How do they know it was the James Gang? Weren't they wearing masks? The old Courthouse is great 1930s architecture. There are many 1800s homes to see. Most have been preserved or are in some stage of preservation. While going around on your homes tour, look for castle type, stone home with the very distinct turret. Look for the blue tile roof. While you're touring, take time out and enjoy the local eateries.
We went to the historic jail first and then to look around the town. We found this amazing pie shop that sold pie in Mason jars! Cute little restaurants and quaint area. Fun day!
I found all the shops to be unique, fairly priced and fun to shop in. Several historical museums are within walking distance, and a civil war store has real antiques and info. A mural is painted on outdoor brick walls that are worth getting out of your car for a closer look!!
We liked some of the little shops and antique stores. A good, place to just walk around on a slow, pace.
Interesting to window shop around the square and see some of the beautiful houses in the immediate area.
